Disturbing Sea Turtles Is A Crime

Sea turtle season runs from April 1 - October 31 each year.

The Marine Turtle Protection Act, Section 379.2431 of the State of Florida statutes makes it illegal to handle or disturb a sea turtle, its hatchlings, nest or eggs. Violations of the code can include fines and time in prison depending on the severity of the violation.

To report a violation, or if you find a sick, disoriented or injured sea turtle, contact:

• Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission
(FWC) at 1.888.404.FWCC (3922) or *392 from your mobile device.
• Miami-Dade County Sea Turtle Alert Hotline at 305.310.3046, or 786.719.6836 after hours.
• Miami Beach Police Department at 305.673.7901

Fight the Bite

Take precautions against mosquito-borne illness by applying bug spray, avoiding areas with high mosquito populations, and wearing long pants and shirts when possible - especially during sunrise and sunset when mosquitoes are most active.

To prevent the bite and spread of disease by mosquitoes, remember to drain and cover.

  • Flush water from water-bearing plants so they don't become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Disposing of excess water at least once a week disrupts the mosquitoes' life cycle, preventing mosquito egg deposits and killing existing larvae in the process.
  • Survey your garden and backyard, checking landscaping for current and future locations of standing water. Mosquitoes need as little as a bottle cap of water to reproduce, so every little bit counts.
  • Eliminate all sources of standing water by emptying potential water-holding yard items, including pots, buckets and wheelbarrows weekly. Make sure to drain items more frequently following rainfall.
Gas-Powered Leaf Blower Ban - Full Enforcement Now in Effect

The Miami Beach City Commission voted unanimously to phase out gasoline-powered leaf blowers as part of the city’s commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Similar to the city’s regulation on polystyrene and plastic straws/stirrers, the new ordinance followed a phased implementation approach. The nine-month warning period began on November 1, 2022 and ended on July 31, 2023. Full enforcement is now in effect.

Initial violations in a 12-month period carry a $250 fine while the second violation in a 12-month period carries a $500 fine. The third violation and each additional violation in a 12-month period carries a $1,000 fine.

Fertilizer Ban

Biscayne Bay provides recreational, cultural and economic well-being for our entire community. Show our bay some love by keeping it fertilizer free.

Biscayne Bay has suffered recent fish kills from degraded water quality. Fertilizer application is banned in Miami Beach and broader Miami-Dade County from May 15 through November 1.

As a homeowner, property manager or landscaping professional, you can help protect our natural habitats by following the guidelines and restrictions on our fertilizer ordinance.

For more information on fertilizer application outside of the restricted period visit www.MBRisingAbove.com/fertilizers.
