46th Annual Art Deco Weekend

Starting today, enjoy Art Deco Weekend a free community cultural festival celebrating Miami Beach’s architecture, history, arts and culture. Organized by the Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL) with major support from the City of Miami Beach and the Original Miami Beach Antique Show, the festival is celebrating its 46th year with the theme: Art Deco Worldwide, in honor of the upcoming 16th World Congress on Art Deco, taking place April 18-30 in South Florida.

MDPL started Art Deco Weekend in 1977 to bring attention to the beautiful Art Deco architecture along Ocean Drive and throughout Miami Beach. This signature event is MDPL’s largest educational outreach program of the year and a major part of the organization’s initiative to preserve, protect, and promote historic preservation in the Art Deco District and greater Miami.

That list now includes Miami Beach thanks to the generosity of philanthropist and local businessman Norman Braman as you’ll read in “Larger-Than-Life ‘Minna’ Transforms Pride Park” on page 22.

While you regularly see Miami Beach Police Officers around our city, you may not know that there is a group of MBPD officers dedicated to each neighborhood. Get to know your neighborhood resource officer and learn more about their integral role in “Resource Officers Bring Neighborly Approach to Police Work” on page 52.

Helen Swartz is one of our more dynamic residents who lives with mobility issues. While our city can — and will — do more to improve accessibility, we’ve come a long way toward making Miami Beach a more accessible place for our many residents and visitors as you’ll see in “For Many, Quality of Life Shaped by Accessibility” on page 38.

Seawall Ordinance

Seawalls are built to protect areas of human habitation along the coast against tides, waves and sea level rise. Of the 55 miles of seawalls in Miami Beach, only five miles are publicly owned. Ordinance 2021-4393 requires all new seawalls to be built to a minimum elevation of 5.7 feet NAVD, or 4 feet NAVD if designed to support a future elevation of 5.7 feet NAVD – provided the work is not considered substantial improvements, or work totaling $300 or more per linear foot.

For more information on seawall elevation and steps to upgrading your seawall, visit MBRisingAbove.com/seawall.
#NoFilter

Up to 98% of cigarette filters are made of plastic fibers, which leads to an estimated 1.69 billion pounds of trash each year and each butt can take up to 10 years to disintegrate.
