Hurricane Season Continues

The Miami Beach Division of Emergency Management is currently monitoring Tropical Depression Nine, located several hundred miles east-southeast of Jamaica over the eastern Caribbean Sea. This disturbance poses no threat to Florida over the next 3 days.

Miami Beach will continue to provide updates on this weather system as it evolves. For real time updates, visit www.nhc.noaa.gov

Hurricane season runs through November 30 and it's important to have a plan. If you have not taken steps to prepare your families and households, now is the time to update your plan and build a kit. Visit our hurricane preparedness webpage for tips on how to stay safe this hurricane season.

King Tide Season

King tide season is here! September king tides are expected from Tuesday, September 27 through Friday, September 30.

When king tides rise to an elevation higher than the adjacent land, flooding is often exhibited. Since Miami Beach is low-lying and near sea level, the city is particularly vulnerable to king tide flooding. Miami Beach also faces flood risk from storms, hurricanes and sea level rise and is implementing a holistic climate resilience strategy to address these flood risks.

Avoid floodwaters and report flooding to 305.673.7625 or [email protected].

Gas-Powered Leaf Blower Ban

The Miami Beach City Commission voted unanimously to phase out gasoline-powered leaf blowers as part of the city’s commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Similar to the city’s regulation on polystyrene and plastic straws/stirrers, the new ordinance will follow a phased implementation approach. This includes a nine-month educational period from February 1 through October 31, 2022 followed by a nine-month warning period from November 1, 2022 to July 1, 2023. Full enforcement will commence on August 1, 2023.

Seawall Ordinance

Seawalls are built to protect areas of human habitation along the coast against tides, waves, and sea level rise. Of the 55 miles of seawalls in Miami Beach, only five miles are publicly owned.

Private properties play an important role in reducing the community vulnerability of storm surge and tidal flooding. The city's seawall ordinance requires all new seawalls to be built at an elevation of 5.7’ NAVD or 4 feet NAVD if designed to support a future elevation of 5.7' NAVD.

Fertilizer Ordinance

Beautiful and serene, Biscayne Bay provides recreational, cultural and economic well-being for our entire community. To help keep the bay healthy and pristine, the City of Miami Beach has prohibited the use of fertilizer application from May 15 through November 1. Show our bay some love and help keep it fertilizer free.

For more information on fertilizer application outside of the restricted period visit www.MBRisingAbove.com/fertilizers.

Drain and Cover

To prevent the bite and spread of disease by mosquitoes, remember to drain and cover.

  • Flush water from water-bearing plants so they don't become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Disposing of excess water at least once a week disrupts the mosquitoes' life cycle, preventing mosquito egg deposits and killing existing larvae in the process.

  • Survey your garden and backyard, checking landscaping for current and future locations of standing water. Mosquitoes need as little as a bottle cap of water to reproduce, so every little bit counts.

  • Eliminate all sources of standing water by emptying potential water-holding yard items, including pots, buckets and wheelbarrows weekly. Make sure to drain items more frequently following rainfall.
