Heat Season

May marks the start of heat season in Miami-Dade County, and if you have ever noticed that it was hotter in a heavily developed area compared to a mostly natural, nearby area, then you have experienced the “heat island effect.” The heat island effect mostly occurs in cities, where the built environment absorbs sunlight and radiates heat back into the environment. In 2019, the City of Miami Beach passed the Urban Heat Island Ordinance which requires new construction to install a sustainable roofing system, reducing the impact of the heat island effect.

The heat island effect can have an impact on public health due to extreme heat. Extreme heat can cause heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and heat cramps, among other health impacts.

We ❤ Biscayne Bay

Biscayne Bay is one of the most valuable natural resources in South Florida. It is an important estuary that provides critical habitat and other ecological, environmental and economic benefits to the region. Biscayne Bay also welcomes several species of sea turtles, including the Atlantic Green Turtle, the Atlantic Hawksbill, the Leatherback, the Atlantic Ridley and the Loggerhead

The seagrass beds throughout Biscayne Bay also support important fisheries such as shrimp, lobster and fish. The seagrass also helps to stabilize sediments in the bay and attenuate wave energy from hurricanes and other storms. In addition to providing critical habitat, the bay’s waters support the regional economy, recreation and tourism.

Show your love for Biscayne Bay by taking the pledge to protect it. When signing the pledge, you will have the opportunity to receive a welcome packet with more resources on protecting Biscayne Bay.

Click here to take the pledge.
Sea Turtle Season

Multiple city departments are collaborating to help protect our favorite marine friends. Sea Turtle season runs from April 1 through Oct. 31.

The community is encouraged to reduce the impacts on sea turtles by switching to sea turtle-friendly lighting, closing blinds or curtains at night, and keeping a distance from sea turtles and their nests.

Click here to learn more about how you can watch out for the little one.
Sargassum (Seaweed)

Have you noticed additional brown seaweed along our beaches recently? This is referred to as sargassum.
This seaweed, which is abundant this time of year in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, is not dangerous, but can cause skin irritation from the tiny sea creatures that live in it. While this is a natural occurrence, the city is working with the county to do everything possible to minimize the inconvenience to our residents and visitors.

The highest concentrations of sargassum are found in Miami Beach between March and October. Please note, to protect nesting and hatchling sea turtles our team takes extra precautions prior to any heavy equipment being operated on the beach since sea turtle season runs concurrently with the influx of sargassum.

Gas-Powered Leaf Blower Ban

The Miami Beach City Commission voted unanimously on Thursday, Jan. 20 to phase out gasoline-powered leaf blowers as part of the city’s commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Similar to the city’s regulation on polystyrene and plastic straws/stirrers, the new ordinance will follow a phased implementation approach. This includes a nine-month educational period from Feb. 1 – Oct. 31 followed by a nine-month warning period from Nov. 1 to Jul. 1, 2023. Full enforcement will commence on Aug. 1, 2023.

Seawalls

Of the 55 miles of seawalls in Miami Beach, only four miles are publicly owned. Private properties play a crucial role in the city's seawall program. Properties that experience tidal flooding or are proposing new construction and major renovations are required to upgrade their seawalls to be built at an elevation of 5.7 feet NAVD.
