American Academy of Pediatrics Releases PSA on Safely Storing Medications
|

Every year, more than 60,000 kids end up in the emergency room because they were able to access medicine when an adult wasn't looking. In this public service announcement from the AAP, Dr. Shelly Flais explains how to protect children by safely storing medicine at home. National Institutes of Health HEAL Initiative
to Address Opioid Crisis through Research

The National Institutes of Health kicked off its HEAL initiative (Helping to End Addiction Long-term) to address the opioid crisis, with the announcement last month of several bold research projects across NIH. The HEAL initiative will focus on two main areas: improving opioid addiction treatments and enhancing pain management to prevent addiction and overdose.

National Council Creates Toolkit for Recovery Housing
|
|
The National Council developed a toolkit that addresses needs of policymakers and advocates when considering legislative and regulatory approaches. This resource provides strategies and tools as well as examples of policy language that addresses the role and contribution of recovery housing, standards of care for recovery housing and protections for people in recovery served by such residences.

NIDA Training Module Now Available for Acute Pain Management in Hospitalized Adults
|
|
A case-based clinician training module designed for the evaluation of acute pain and opioid management for adults is now available through the Centers of Excellence in Pain Education (CoEPE) program, coordinated by the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
Opioid Management for Acute Pain in Hospitalized Adults is the 10th pain education interactive CoEPE module developed by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Pain Consortium and is designed for emergency room responders and pharmacists.

New clinician screening tool available for substance use
|
|
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Clinical Trials Network has unveiled a new scientifically validated, online screening tool designed to assess a patient’s risk for substance misuse and substance use disorder, and assist the health care provider with prevention and treatment strategies. The Tobacco, Alcohol, Prescription medication, and other Substance use (TAPS) Tool is available on the NIDAMED Web Portal and consists of a comprehensive screening component followed by a brief assessment for those who screen positive.
