19th Sunday of Ordinary Time | Aug 11, 2019
Your weekly word
W hen people find out I am a college campus minister they sometimes say, “Your job must be difficult with so many students loosing their faith in college.” The comment always calls to mind something a priest told me once. “I’ve never met anyone who lost their faith in college,” he said, “but I’ve met lots of people who lost their faith growing up at home and college was the first time they had to exercise that option.”

It’s true. If you are a faithful student embarking on your college career, you don’t need to worry about “loosing” your faith, as if it might get misplaced or stolen away from you. You just have to be faithful. But what does that mean...?
In Christ's Peace,
Deacon Matt
WEEK OF WELCOME
Get Ready!
Only one more week until the start of the new semester! We can't wait to see students back on campus. Join us for our Week of Welcome activities with something happening each day at CCM. We'll have our full schedule in next week's email, but highlights include:

  • First Mass on Sunday Aug 18 at 4:00pm
  • First Dinner on Wednesday Aug 21 at 6:00pm
  • Annual Sunset Picnic & Hike at Waterrock Knob on Friday Aug 23 at 6:00pm. (The photo above was from last year's hike).

Assumption of Mary - Aug 15
Don't forget: Next Thursday, Aug 15, is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is a holy day of obligation. This feast honors the end of Mary's life, when she was assumed body and soul into heaven. You can read more about what the Catholic Church teaches about Mary's assumption on our blog .

For students returning to Cullowhee early, Mass for the Assumption will be celebrated at St. Mary's at the following times:

  • Aug 14 at 5:30pm
  • Aug 14 at 7:00pm (Spanish)
  • Aug 15 at 9:00am
  • Aug 15 at 6:00pm

One of our senior students will be receiving the sacraments of Confirmation and First Eucharist at the 6:00pm Mass on Aug 15, so we are encouraging any student who can to come to that Mass to celebrate with us!
Need a Ride to Mass?
If you are coming to campus early and need a ride to Mass, either for the Solemnity of the Assumption on the 15th or for Sunday Mass on the 11th, please let us know by emailing ccm@wcucatholic.org or posting a message in our Facebook Group . We can put you in contact with other students on campus who have vehicles you can carpool with.

Returning students be advised: St. Mary's has changed their Sunday Mass times to 8:30 & 11:30 am.
Fall Parking Passes
We are officially SOLD OUT of our parking passes for the fall semester. Thanks to everyone who purchased one as all proceeds go to fund our ministry.
Aug 23-25
Free Retreat Opportunity
The Greek Ukrainian Catholic Mission of Canton, NC is offering an East Meets West retreat at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Canton the weekend of Aug 23-25. It is only about a 40 minute drive from campus and college students are welcome to participate. There is no cost, though donations are appreciated. The weekend will feature prayer in the Byzantine tradition and reflections on the divine liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. More information, including a schedule, is available on their web site . If any student is interested in attending, let Deacon Matt know so we can arrange a car pool.
Sept 6-7
EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS
We will be travelling together from Cullowhee to attend the 15th Annual Eucharistic Congress in Charlotte. Dr. Scott Hahn will be our special guest for the College Night on Friday evening. Students will spend the night at St. Peter's participating in Adoration, join in the Eucharistic Procession on Saturday morning, and enjoy the wonderful Catholic speakers and vendors throughout the day before returning to campus Saturday evening.
