The Importance of Self Care
March 2021 Newsletter

"Self-care is not selfish. When you take time to replenish your spirit, it allows you to serve others from the overflow. You cannot serve from an empty vessel."
- Eleanor Brown

Have you found yourself struggling to keep up with the rush of the world around you? Are you stretched thin by work and family or drained by your personal goals and endeavors. 2021 already seems to be whizzing by at an alarming rate and although it's a new year, many of the stressors we found ourselves faced with in 2020 haven't left us yet. With everything we find ourselves juggling and balancing in today's world, it can be easy to forget how important it is to take care of ourselves.

Equines instinctively take care of themselves so that they can contribute to the overall success of the herd. Where do YOU fall on your list of to-dos? What if you were to value yourself as much as everyone else? I encourage you to take a few moments to reflect and do something to replenish yourself - for some inspiration check out our tips and articles below. Not only will it be good for you, but your loved ones might just thank you for it, too!

Take Care this March,

6 Steps to Self Care

The first step towards caring for and replenishing yourself is recognizing the importance of Self-Care as a means to living your best life and fulfilling your goals. When we take care of ourselves first, we allow ourselves the opportunity to strengthen and support ourselves in a way that makes it possible for us to show up not only for ourselves but for others as well. Self-care is the foundation for both personal growth and service to others - it is infused with loving kindness and the intention for holistic wellness and balance.

#1 - Listen to yourself:
We instinctively know what's best for us, but often we don't listen!
We push on, ignoring telltale signs from our bodies & minds - tiredness, pain, that nagging feeling in your gut. Pay attention to the physical signs you get from your body & respect what they are telling you. Emotional messages come through too - honor your feelings. If you don't like what you're doing, why are you doing it? Perhaps there's another way. If something feels wrong, don't do it!

#2 - Prioritize:  No one can do it all and trying is just going to land you in a world of distress and disappointment...(read more)

Horse Wisdom

Jerry* came to us through a program for Veterans. He and his wife, Anna, were participating in an activity that involved walking their equine around the arena to four designated barrels labeled with different topics to discuss and reflect on.  On the barrel, labeled "Self Care" there were a few brushes to invite the opportunity to take some time to brush their horse and talk about what self-care meant to them. When Jerry and his wife had a turn at the "Self Care" station and started to brush their horse, something unexpected happened...Read More

In the Workplace

Most people think of self-care as something you do before or after work.  But considering how many hours we spend at work,
professional self-care is actually central to our well-being and the health of our relationships. Not only is this important on an individual basis, but studies have shown that when leaders practice and promote health, authenticity and self-care there is a positive impact on the bottom line. The effects are cumulative, so one small change, such as actually taking a relaxing lunch break, creates positive momentum.

Success Stories

Open Barn July 2012
"My visit to Stand InBalance was a relaxing, therapeutic, comforting and
humbling experience. I learned how to be more patient and had a realization
about what I really want."
- Neville, Student & Veteran

"The work at Stand InBalance is an incredibly caring and nurturing opportunity to be with equines for personal self growth. As a result of the workshop, I was reminded to slow down, be mindful and focus on intent."
- Janet, Business Entrepreneur
"I came to Stand InBalance because I struggle with healthy boundaries in relationships and want to really hone in on how to strengthen my boundaries in a healthy manner, protect and take care of myself. The experience I had was so
much more helpful, being in an environment where I am actually doing
the work and not just talking about it like in traditional therapy. I worked on how to
be more direct without fearing how others are going to react and to choose healthier situations when someone isn't heeding my needs. I am so grateful for the incredible facilitators at Stand InBalance."
-Nancy, Stunt Woman.
