From the Chair
Here we are in April a mere 13 months after most of us were homebound due to a Global Pandemic. I'm not even sure that we had gotten comfortable with calling it Covid yet. We weren't sure we would have a season and that was probably the least of our concerns at the time.
Now 13 months later, Opening Day for two Area 1 Events have happened and more are coming our way. There is excitement for all the great Adult Rider and Young Rider Programs coming up and most of us have had a chance to get outside again and dream of the 2021 Area 1 Eventing Season. What a change...
So, I'd like to throw a few things out to all us eventers as a way to show gratitude for having a season to get excited about:
- Support your Area 1 Events by volunteering and recruiting volunteers as much and as often as you can
- Donate to those Area 1 Events that are also 501 3cs (non-profit, charitable institutions) like GMHA, Millbrook and Groton House Farm (yes it has cancelled but what a great way to show appreciation)
- Enter early, preferably on Opening Day. Let your favorite events know that you can't wait to compete there.
- Support smaller Area 1 Events as well as the destination events
And for those of you who didn't have the opportunity to attend our Virtual Annual Meeting and Breakout Sessions, you can find the recordings on the Area 1 Website or by clicking here.

Let's give a round of thank yous to:
Sarah O'Sullivan (Adams) - Sarah is our retiring Area 1 Council Chair. Her leadership was key to our successes in 2018, 2019 and 2020. We are grateful for her positive attitude and commitment to Area 1 Eventing.
Missy Alaimo - Missy is retiring as our Webmaster after 3+ years managing our website. She is always a most positive influencer who is quick to help and a dedicated volunteer in many capacities. Area 1 is lucky to have her.
Sharyn Antico - Sharyn is the 2020 recipient of the Chairman's Award. Sharyn is the Area 1 Organizer Representative. 2020 was an incredible year of change and Sharyn managed to make everything work while maintaining an incredibly positive manner.
And although I can not name everyone, be sure to give Area 1 eventers a round of applause for their commitment to volunteering. I was recently in Area 3 and was pleasantly surprised to see so many Area 1 folks volunteering in Aiken. That is incredible and dedication.
So, get out there! Enjoy your ponies and kick on! We got this.
Have a great ride!
Suzanne Adams
Suzanne Adams is an Insurance Consultant by day, a crazy horse girl most of her waking moments and believes strongly in volunteerism. She was the Area 1 Adult Rider Coordinator from 2014 - 2019 before assuming the Area 1 Chair in 2020.

Wow! What a start to this year. I can happily say that the Young Rider program is off and running! We have 88 members at this time and from the feedback that I've received so far from members, parents, and trainers, our membership is excited to get on with learning, training, competing, volunteering and supporting each other and this cool sport we are so privileged to take part in.
So far...
March 15th we collaborated with Liz Johnson at UNH to present a Zoom Rules Refresher to dust off the cobwebs and give us all some great perspective on the importance of the rules of our sport. It was presented by Liz Johnson (event organizer), Katherine Cooper (USEA licensed technical delegate) and Jane Hamlin (FEI Eventing Judge). Lots of wisdom was shared! There were 39 devices logged in and many of them had multiple people gathered around them. The recording is up on the Area 1 website and I highly recommend checking it out. Thank you Strafford Saddlery for donating "door" prizes!!!
March 25th-27th was the first leg of the new USEF/Adequan Eventing Youth Team Challenge. We fielded a full team for the CCI2*S at Stable View in Aiken, S. Carolina. **spoiler alert** We won!! It was such a privilege to watch our 4 amazing horse and rider pairs representing Area 1 - Jack Curtis and Luska Candy Clover, Elizabeth Gill and Opportunity Knox, Ayden Schain and Fernhill Hole Shot, Libby Scruton and One and Only. They went with the flow as we all tried to figure out how best to navigate this new team competition in the midst of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions and EHV-1 concerns. If these young riders are a representative sample of who is coming up through the ranks in Area 1, our future looks very good indeed! Read all the competition details in the separate article written by Jay Olcott. Find out more about the USEF/Adequan Eventing Youth Team Challenge here. There are 3 more CCIS format events planned throughout the summer and at each one we can field up to 2 teams and 2 individuals at each level, CCI1*, CCI2*, CCI3*. The east coast finals will be the CCI1*, 2*, 3*L at Tryon, North Carolina in November. We have a total of 22 Young Riders who have declared eligibility with the USEF to compete on an Area 1 team. Yes 22!! With the many different levels and a wider age range, our riders have more opportunities to ride on a team than ever before. We'll keep you posted on social media so you can cheer for your teams!
Coming up next...
Early April brings us a fabulous opportunity to begin final preparations for entering at A in the first events of the year in Area 1. We are offering our Young Rider program members a virtual dressage test critique of any USEF dressage test of choice. Members will send a video of themselves riding a dressage test. The video will be reviewed and scored by FEI Eventing Judge, Jane Hamlin. For those of you who might not know, Jane has judged all over the world, and will also be one of the judges at the Tokyo Olympics this summer. Details have gone out to members about how to submit your video. If you did not get an email describing how to submit a video, don't hesitate to contact me at melanie.loschiavo@gmail.com.
Save the date for GMHA Young Rider Camp - July 19th afternoon arrival through July 22nd afternoon departure. At the time of this writing, the details are getting worked out and we will have the applications out to everyone soon. It is open to all riders in the Young Rider program from Beginner Novice and up. We do have limited spots and in the past it has filled up fast.
We've got much more in the planning stages so keep tuned in for all we will have to offer.

Adult Rider News
As the Area 1 season quickly approaches, I hope you and your horses are healthy and ready for another year. It has been nice to see some of you in Aiken the past few months. The ARP is ready for the season and we have many activities and programs planned.
Virtual Team Challenge
The challenge is back, sign-ups are between April 1st and April 30th. You must be a USEA and Area 1 ARP member by April 30th. To sign up please contact me via email at adultriders@area1usea.org or message me on Facebook. There will be a private Facebook group established for the challenge and is the primary means of challenge updates, communications, and scores. The challenge begins May 8th with Apple Knoll and ends at the last Area event currently October 10th. Please see https://area1usea.org/adult-riders/virtual-teams/ for more information.
Adult Team Challenges
There will be two Area Adult Team Challenges this year. We are changing the venues this year based on feedback and GMHA holding the 2020 and 2021 Championships. The first one will be at Coursebrook July 24-25th and the second at GVRDC in August 21-22nd. Coursebook has a MT division and GVRDC has a Modified division which will be included in the team challenge (BN – Prelim).
Young and the Rest of Us Team Challenge
This challenge is for Adult Riders and Young Riders. Each team must have a minimum of two young or junior riders and one ARP member, the fourth member can be any Area 1 eventer. Young/junior riders do not have to belong to the Young Rider Program (but are encouraged to be). The challenge will be held at Larkin Hill July 3-4th. For more information https://area1usea.org/adult-riders/young-rest-challenge/
Win Some Wine Some Program
If you have ever had an event not quite go your way this award program could make you feel a bit better. The award will be offered at each Area 1 recognized event, for those ARP members who did not quite have the go they wanted. The prize is an etched stemless wine glass allowing you to have some wine (or beverage of choice) while you whine about what went wrong. Limit to winning once per season, more details to come in April.
Vintage Vine Award
A new year end award sponsored by Katie Murphy and Roger Demers. Open to those 60 and older. A nice bottle of wine presented to the most mature (by age) ARP member who enters and completes an Area 1 Recognized Event during the year at any level.
Volunteer Awards
A new year end award program to recognize those ARP members that truly support keeping our events running through volunteering. These awards will be given out to the top 3 ARP volunteers of Area 1 recognized events. Hours towards set-up, day of event, and tear down of events counts. Hours will be tracked via the USEA Volunteering Incentive Program for those events not using the volunteer app, a form will be provided to log hours. Program will start with first Area 1 recognized event and end at the last event of the season.
The Educational Vouchers, Classic Series Voucher, and ICP Grants are also available for qualified activities. Please review to the Adult Rider Section of the Area 1 website for more information.
Please make sure you have a current email on file with USEA, as that is used for our mailing list to inform you about events. Also please join the Area 1 Adult Rider Facebook Page to see announcements.
If you have questions on how to become an ARP member, any comments, program ideas, or good peanut butter cookie recipes feel free to contact me at adultriders@area1usea.org

Young Horse Happenings
I am very excited to say that we will have at least 4 Future Event Horse competitions in Area 1 this year! Apple Knoll in Millis MA will be first with a "Young Horse Weekend" featuring a clinic with Jerry Schurink on June 19 and 20th with at least an FEH competition on June 20th. Larkin Hill will be having a Young Horse Weekend as well on July 10th and 11th, with an FEH competition on July 11th (clinician for the 10th TBD). GVRDC will also be hosting an FEH competition in conjunction with their August Horse Trials on August 21-22. Finally, Valinor Farm has also expressed interest in hosting a FEH, YEH, and NEH competition this season! All venues will provide a safe and educational weekend for your young horse, and these events will be qualifiers for the FEH championships hosted at Loch Moy Farm in MD on September 25-26, 2021. YEH championships will be held on October 14-15, 2021 at the Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill, Elkton, MD.
There are a lot of options for young horses in our FEH, YEH, and NEH programs. Please feel free to reach out to me, Andrea Manley, with questions about any program. I am happy to help and promote our wonderful young horses from Area 1!
