Area Students Engage With Regional Professionals
Director, Workforce Development
On Thursday, October 24, JARI, Human Resources Association of the Alleghenies (HRAA), and the Cambria County Drug Coalition hosted the 8th Annual Youth Professional Development Conference (YPDC) at the Pasquerilla Conference Center in downtown Johnstown.
The conference hosted nearly 130 students in grades 10-12 from 10 school districts. Students heard from leaders in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics to align with the theme of STEAM generators, drawing on the next generation's careers in those areas. Joe Markiewicz, master facilitator and youth trainer of Building Stronger Communities, served as the keynote speaker with a motivational presentation on getting involved in school activities and the community.
YPDC gives students the opportunity to engage with a variety of business and industry leaders and human resources professionals. The community leaders who shared their time as session speakers and panelists include: Molly Thomson, Naval Warfare Center - Dahlgren Division; Mike Hinson, Kitron; Tobie Gunby, AmeriServ; Shawn Kaufman, Riggs Industries; Josh Meyers, Oak & Acorn Painting; Tessa Minnick, Pepsi Bottling Group; and James Selapack, Sourceree. In addition, Mike Messina of the Community Action Partnership of Cambria County provided an overview of the history of Red Ribbon Week.
