IIABAZ Runs Certificates of Insurance Legislation

Certificates of Insurance are informational documents that provide a good faith snapshot or summarized reflection of the insurance policy to a third party as of the date of issuance and do not convey rights themselves or alter the insurance policy that they describe.

Problems have arisen because some requesters of certificates have attempted to alter the purpose, effect, and status of certificates. For example, some parties today (1) request the issuance of certificates that purport to expand insurance coverage beyond the terms of the underlying policies, (2) demand the inclusion of unreasonable terms and conditions, and (3) otherwise attempt to force insurance agents to issue certificates or answer questionnaires that are deceptive and misleading.

There is often no downside or penalty for an entity who makes an unreasonable demand for a certificate of insurance, and agents are placed in untenable positions as a result.

Advocating on behalf of our members, the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of Arizona requested that Rep. Jeff Weninger introduce House Bill 2996 DIFI; Certificates of Insurance this Session that addresses these issues by imposing requirements upon third parties and prohibiting them from requesting certain types of certs. Similar legislation passed in other states has had significant benefits and reduced the number of improper requests received by agents.

We will keep you informed about this legislation and other bills affecting the insurance industry in our upcoming Legislative Updates.

Arizona Big I Creates Women in Insurance Committee

IIABAZ President Mike Gallaugher created the Women in Insurance Committee this year appointing Committee Co-Chairs Deanna Chew with Willis Towers Watson and Alyson Hutchins with BBSI to offer networking opportunities and programs for our women insurance professionals.

The inaugural event is being held on February 11 at the Arizona Biltmore for a historical tour of the hotel and a networking lunch. Invitations and registration information was sent out to agency members in January.
