What happens when artists are invited to contribute to community improvement efforts? This question is at the heart of a new podcast series. In AZ Creative Voices, producer Regina Revazova introduces listeners to eight teams working with artists to create solutions to complex community challenges.

AZ Creative Voices documents the work of the inaugural cohort of
AZ Creative Communities Institute (AZ CCI), an initiative of the Arizona Commission on the Arts and Arizona State University’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, with guidance from Southwest Folklife Alliance, an affiliate nonprofit of the University of Arizona.

The application period for Fiscal Year 2021 Community Investment Grants and Festival Grants is now open!

Community Investment Grants (CIG) provide unrestricted general operating support to nonprofit arts organizations of all sizes, local arts agencies, and tribal cultural organizations whose primary mission is to produce, present, teach, or serve the arts.
|
Reminder:
All organizations that received a CIG in Fiscal Year 2020 will complete an Alternate Year Application for Fiscal Year 2021.
On their alternate year, CIG applicants submit an abbreviated application and a DataArts’ Funder Report. They do not undergo panel review and maintain the same funding priority determined during the previous year’s panel review.

Festival Grants support organizations in their efforts to provide quality arts programming through festival activities and are awarded to assist with the costs of connecting artists (or their artistic work) with communities.

Arizona arts leaders to receive Shelley Awards at 2020 Governor's Arts Awards
Our friends at Arizona Citizens for the Arts have announced that Catherine “Rusty” Foley and Robert Booker will be honored at the annual Governor’s Arts Awards celebration with the Shelley Award, which is presented annually to a individuals who have advanced Arizona arts and culture through strategic and innovative work to create or support public policy beneficial to the arts in Arizona. The ceremony will be held in Mesa on March 26.

Flagstaff celebrates local arts and sciences community
The Viola Awards are Flagstaff’s "Oscars for the arts and sciences community". Celebrating excellence in the arts and sciences, the Viola Awards recognize artists, educators, organizations and leaders who make positive contributions to the arts and sciences in Flagstaff.
This year's Viola Awards will be presented on March 7 at High Country Conference Center.

Arizona artist collective receives $10,000 grant from NALAC
National Association of Latino Arts & Cultures (NALAC) awarded a $10,000 artist grant to artist collective Las Fronterizas in support of the creation, development, and production of “Mis Amores Fronterizos,” a multidisciplinary performance scheduled for March 2020 at the US / Mexico border in Douglas, AZ and Agua Prieta, SON.

2020 AZ Poetry Out Loud State Finals
Each year, thousands of students across the state compete in Poetry Out Loud, a national poetry recitation competition. In February, each participating school sent their champion to one of three regional competitions to determine the nine students who will vie for the title of state champion in March. The winner of the state finals will then go on to represent Arizona in the National Finals in Washington, DC!

NEA awards $150,000 grant to ASU for Caregiving Research Initiative
ASU's new Caregiving Research Initiative will receive $150,000 in funding support from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). the initiative will examine the role of three art forms in three caregiving situations. The lab’s research into theater will be conducted in partnership with Childsplay Theatre Company.

Arts Commission grantee and author Fenton Johnson releases new book
We're always happy to receive updates from past grantees! This month we a note from Tucson author Fenton Johnson along with a copy of his new book, "At the Center of All Beauty." Johnson received an artist project grant in 2003 in support of the book's writing. Congratulations, Fenton!

2020 TCG National Conference

This June, Theatre Communications Group (TCG) will bring its annual conference to Phoenix. Nearly 1,000 theatre artists, educators, and administrators will engage in programming developed by TCG in partnership with field practitioners along three new tracks, the ABCs of PHX: Artistry in Action, Best Practices, and Capacity Building.
