Raising awareness of the need to recruit and retain high quality and diverse agriculture teachers, and encourage students to consider a career in agriculture education, is a key focus area for the Agricultural Education, Technology and Innovation (AETI) Department in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at The University of Arizona. Through the Arizona Agricultural Education/FFA Foundation, we are honored to support AETI to focus on increasing the number of students in the career field of agriculture education. This month we are pleased to highlight the Teach Ag Academy Program.
The inaugural Teach Ag Academy launched this past July with 19 agriculture education students from across Arizona participating under the coordination of Dr. Amber Rice and Paige Johnson, AETI Student Worker.
The purpose of the academy was to invite prospective college students who are enrolled in a high school Ag Ed program, to a three-day event showcasing Agricultural Education at the University of Arizona. Academy students heard from current agriculture educators from around the state about their experiences in the profession. Additionally, Agriculture Education faculty presented several workshops which included, Agriculture Education at the UofA, Agriculture Education Scholarships, Being an FFA Advisor, and connecting the classroom to the world. Staff facilitated team-building activities included a campus-wide scavenger hunt where students were able to familiarize themselves with the campus. Faculty and staff at the South Recreation Center, and the Flandrau Science Center & Planetarium allowed students to get an inside look at activities available on campus. Students also experienced Tucson-specific activities, such as trying Eegee’s, touring Flowing Wells High School’s Agriculture facilities, and tackling the 4-H High Ropes Course! To wrap up the academy, students collaborated and presented their own teaching activities.
"This is a valuable program the Foundation was honored to be a part of. It provided students interested in agriculture education as a career, an opportunity to hear from those in the field, learn more about the program at the University of Arizona and see what a rewarding career agriculture education can be.", Rochell Planty, Executive Director of the Arizona FFA Foundation shared.

State FFA President, Kaden Zimmerman Shares
National FFA Convention Experience
At the end of October my teammates and I had the opportunity to travel to Indianapolis, Indiana for the National FFA Convention. This was such an amazing experience that we will never forget. The most memorable thing, was being able to see the incredible “Sea of Blue”, and having such a sense of home. This was such a surreal experience for all of us. I remember feeling humbled and inspired thinking, we as a team are responsible for being the leaders that these amazing individuals deserve. It was truly incredible being able to share the experiences of this trip with all the members of Arizona FFA who were able to attend, and my teammates. From sitting with different chapters at leadership sessions, to catching a quick meal in between competitions, or workshops that FFA members were going to, it was so nice to be able to spend so much time with the members of our organization.
Whenever we interact with our members, we are truly able to see the bright future ahead of us. I see the light inside of them and know that greatness and success awaits them. When I am around all these people, I am truly humbled and inspired. From the FFA member that tends to a field of alfalfa, to the one that loves to compete in parliamentary procedure, to the member singing in the FFA choir, there is such a broad span of diverse people in this organization. Some might wonder, how all these different people, from different places, with different talents and interests could possibly be connected. I know we are all connected by this blue jacket. When you look across that sea of blue, it is made up of an inspiring group of people, who are ready to lead this world and make a difference. It has been one of the greatest prides and honors of my life, to get to know the members of Arizona FFA, and to celebrate them and this amazing organization.
