The middle couple of weeks in August are always the absolute toughest for tracking down people and gathering information. If they aren't getting kids ready to start school, they're taking a last gasp vacation. I'll never forget my first experience with it. Readers who remember my now-retired Arts Spotlight on WQCS might get a laugh from the in-the-beginning story.
It was August 1997. I was hired to produce a daily five-minute show talking to people in the arts on the Treasure Coast. It was to begin the first week in September, a double whammy. There I was in August, naively looking for people to record for the inaugural five shows. There was absolutely nobody around, save a few folks at the Lyric Theatre in Stuart. I ended up featuring the Lyric on every show that week, but guess what. The first show was scheduled for Labor Day, so it was canceled.
With a kickstart like that, the rest of the show's long run was a piece of cake. And one of the great residual effects of those years producing the show is catching up with some of those early interviews for Arts Blast. Even greater is writing about their kids!
Don't forget to scroll to the end for tons of calendar listings and Calls to Artist and Auditions.

Nicole Dupré & The Mikado in Concert
|
This weekend, Maestro Aaron Collins and the Space Coast Symphony will join singers from Opera del Sol and Central Florida Vocal Arts in their second collaboration on a large-scale concert. The Music of the Night Masquerade last year was the first of this size, according to
Nicole Dupré
, founder of Opera del Sol and creative director of the vocal groups, but not the only time they’ve worked together. “(We’ve) worked with Space Coast Symphony on other productions as well, so naturally producing this with them was a dream. Aaron is truly wonderful.”
|
On the Opera del Sol website, the words “Empowered. Innovative. Female.” stand out. Dupré said, “When I met Theresa Smith Levin of Central Florida Vocal Arts two years ago, I knew we had a very similar outlook on the arts, community and the way we could use our collective voices to bring music and light to the community.” Dupré“endeavors to “bring this classic art form outside traditional concert halls, and try to reimagine what opera and the performing arts can be.”
For The Mikado, Dupré is producer and costume designer. In this production, “Arisa Kusumi makes the perfect ‘Empress of Japan’. With her Japanese American roots this was an amazing role for her to play. She even wears an authentic family kimono!” To meet the performers and people behind the scenes online, click on the Space Coast Symphony’s
website program page
.
|
Performing with Opera del Sol can be a moving experience, according to Dupré. “So far we have done some really cool places! We collaborated with LYNX buses and did an actual performance on board a BUS! The Mayor of Orlando even joined us for a few bus stops! We did a performance of "Gift of the Magi" on board Sunrail train.”
Auditions for Opera del Sol were held earlier this year but the door isn’t closed as the group begins its third season. “If anyone is interested in sending their information, and are in to ‘making opera sexy again’ and re-imagining the classics- please email me!
nicole@operadelsol.org
I love hearing different ideas and “opera-tunities”!

Rochelle Sallee in Concert
|
|
Don’t ask her to name a favorite composer. “As a child I loved Mozart. I discovered Chopin and fell into a crush that I have not recovered from, thank goodness! I got exposed by wonderful teachers and mentors to Ravel, Debussy, Mendelssohn and Grieg and perform them all frequently.” She admits to being partial to “the Romantics. Although I love Rachmaninov, Liszt and Scriabin, I have to be choosy in my picks, they had very very large hands. It's all possible, but some days I wish I had just one more centimeter of finger!”
Sallee said she began her piano career at the age of two, when she’d copy her sisters’ hands and sounds until the instructor finally gave in and starting teaching her when she reached four years old. “Raised on ‘strictly Classical,’ she worked out of the book written by Leopold Mozart for his young son, Wolfgang, to fit tiny hands,” Sallee said. Reading music was Sallee’s first written language. “Reading scores and hearing music in my head is as natural as breathing to me.”
|
|
Sallee is now director of music at First Presbyterian Church in Sebastian, and has cut back her major concerts to three or four a year. Her years in commercial music, “soundtracks, backups, jingles, etc ., along with a long stint in musical theatre” give her a love for a great number of genres of music, she said. “Classical music will always place first, but you will find me playing Elton John and all of the great tunes from Broadway both personally and professionally in a variety of venues.” A fan of WQCS, the National Public Radio affiliate on the Treasure Coast, she has a list of listening favorites, but she’s also a binge reader. “I keep a list and visit the library a lot!”
Remember the bit about classical musicians not necessarily being a dull lot? Sallee explained, “Part of my life is also working on sculptures and castings with my daughter, Charlotte, who is 24 and lives in Orlando. We designed the dolphin and seahorse mailboxes you may have seen on US1 or along Barber Street in Sebastian. Sewing, a dying art, is still on the fun and creative side of my life, and Charlotte and I share that as well.”
|
|
Still not convinced? She continued, “Due to beating my body up having so much fun for so many years, I no longer skydive or ski, but I had a great time as an instructor in both sports. I retired my flight instructor rating finally, as I just can't keep up with flying and working as much as I do in music world, but I still ‘talk shop’ with local pilots.”
Be prepared to hold onto your hats Aug. 25 at Community Church of Vero Beach, in the chapel. Keep in mind that the chapel has limited seating, so early is better for the 4 p.m. start.

St. Lucie Village Artist Arlia Almond
|
|
Relaxing in the shade, admiring her lush, green surroundings, sipping something cool. Or feet up on a cushion on her screened porch, book in hand, Kino Kat at her side, sipping something cool. Ah, the life of a retired mom and artist.
I first met Arlia Almond through a friend, her daughter, Julie Lounibos, and a stray cat that kept hanging around my house. Wait. Back up a minute. I haven’t actually met Arlia but I feel as though we’re old friends because her Kino Kat is that stray, and Julie was the go between who brought them together. When Arlia adopted Kino, we became Facebook friends so I could see pictures of him as he got used to being a homebody in the magical historic St. Lucie Village.
And that’s how I learned that the Lounibos apple didn’t fall far from the Almond tree. Arlia’s paintings are on her Facebook page, and Julie’s paintings are online at
https://www.julielounibos.com
; on her Facebook page, Art By The River with Julie Lounibos; and now at Seriously Mixed Media gallery in Fort Pierce. Julie’s daily sunrise on the river photos have been featured in Arts Blast.
|
|
As a student at FAU, Arlia’s studies included stage scene design. “My teacher and mentor wanted me to apply in NYC as a protege to study under a professional artist toward obtaining a license to work in Florida,” she said. Her family situation required her presence in Fort Pierce, however, “So eventually I went to work as a window display decorator for Coke's Stationers in downtown Fort Pierce. A close alternative?”
An art class with local artist Therese Knowles in the ‘60s inspired and encouraged Arlia, “and I was hooked! It was not unusual for me to stay up all night working on a painting just for the joy of it.” She joined the Fort Pierce Art Club, where Beanie Backus was a charter member, and participated in the club’s shows, almost always selling all the paintings she had on display. Arlia developed an allergy to oil paints early on and went on to work in acrylics and pastels.
These days, you’ll see Arlia’s paintings only on Facebook or in private collections. Now 92, she says, “My work is not available to view or sell. Been there, done that. Tired and Retired!” The talent passed along is seen in the work of several family members, including cousin John Dame, Jr.
|
|
Julie reminisced about growing up with the artist: “My mom painted with oils when I was growing up and was active in the local Fort Pierce Art Club, often going on location with art friends to paint plein air. She was a weekend painter since she had a job, but there was always a painting in progress. Many of her paintings during that time sold locally. My mother certainly encouraged my artistic journey. As a child, I was an active sketcher. When I was 12, she gave me my first oil painting set, though painting didn’t yet resonate with me at that time. When I was a young adult, we took a watercolor class together from the then-IRCC. That started my painting career, though at the time I had many more years to work as a nurse.”
Julie had one of those this-must-be-destiny experiences some years ago. “When I was a little girl, I had a favorite tangerine tree in our back yard full of citrus. My mom painted it with the intention of giving me the painting as a gift, but before she gave it to me, she exhibited it at an art show and sold it. She painted another one for me, but I didn’t like it as well. 40 years later, someone told me that they saw one of mom’s paintings at a thrift store. I went to see it, and it was the tangerine tree she had painted for me!” Yes, she bought it, but “I made the mistake of letting the owner of the shop know how special it was. I couldn’t contain my excitement.”

Barbara Hoffman - Cultural Council of Indian River County
|
|
Barbara Hoffman doesn’t hesitate to give her age as “well beyond retirement,” and she’s finally stepping away from her years of service to the Cultural Council of Indian River County to give retirement a try. To no one’s surprise, that term has a different definition for Hoffman; she will continue to guide the development of the Cultural Arts Village as it makes its way through the maze of government requirements.
Hoffman’s six years as executive director are only the finale. The first year of her decade of service she was vice-chair of the Board of Directors, then spent three more years as chairman. Before that her time was spent as a volunteer at the Vero Beach Museum of Art and, professionally, as a human resources consultant.
The Cultural Council of Indian River County is a private not-for-profit organization with a Board, officers, employees and volunteers, plus contract professionals for specialty work. Its function is to promote the cultural arts in the county, Hoffman said. She had a goal when she started out: “Building self-esteem among cultural arts organizations and individual artists as to their professionalism and importance to this community.” Hoffman confidently says, “I feel we have exceeded our goals. … (We) changed the focus of the agency form ‘poor starving artist to a strong and and economic factor in our community.”
|
|
Arts councils are not structured alike in all counties but they have a common vision, Hoffman said, to promote, encourage, and support the arts because:
· Arts drive tourism and revenue to local businesses
· Arts strengthen the economy
· Arts improve academic performance
· Arts unify communities
· Arts improve individual well-being
· Arts spark creativity and innovation
· Arts drive the creative industries
· Arts have social impact
· Arts for the health and well-being of our military
· Arts improve healthcare
Hoffman takes pride in the Cultural Council’s many contributions to the community. She said, “The CCIRC has unified the cultural arts with their leadership, making a stronger case for all of the arts. (It) has pulled the creative industry together, speaking with one voice in promoting the importance of art and culture in Indian River County and advocating for the arts with local, state and federal governmental funding agencies.”
Retirement date is set for September 30. Hoffman’s husband, Dwight, and their two schnauzers, Katy and Kona will be waiting. Congratulations on a job well done, Barbara.
