ARLINGTON AIRPORT

KAWO Quarterly Update

July 1, 2025

Message from the Arlington Airport Director

Happy Summer!

The Airport is abuzz with activity! There’s our Alpha Taxiway project under way with its complexity and inconveniences. We want to thank everyone for their patience as we complete this project. The good news is this project will represent the last asphalt surface work for the foreseeable future. In the last 9 years the Airport has essentially resurfaced all major runways, taxiways and many taxilanes. We also constructed additional aircraft parking areas and brought the designs up to current FAA standards. All in all, this work sets KAWO up for long term functional (and safe) surfaces.

Construction coordination will be taking into account our events and busy flying season and we’ll be posting hard copy and NOTAM information as soon as we are able to on all phases of this important project.

SkyFest planning is well underway, and we’re excited to see what this year's event brings. Go to the SkyFest website for details.

Hometown Fly-In inaugural event is Friday July 11th through the 13th and will include barbeque dinner for pilots on Friday night, breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday mornings and big top event tent for gatherings, speakers and the bands. There will be a food truck and booths, and Ellies will be sponsoring a taco bar and beer garden Saturday evening! Under the wing camping at the Airport will be allowed for pilots attending and registering for both nights. Many aircraft displays will be present and Commemorative Air Force will be showing off their museum and taking folks on flights. See their website for details. The Hometown Fly-In is a free event!

We would like to remind our tenants and users to check NOTAMs for possible operational changes and route changes due to our construction project or just give the Airport Office a call for the latest.

Blue Skies!

Marty Wray, Arlington Airport Director

Arlington Airport High School Intern

Hello, my name is Alex and I’ll be interning at the airport this summer. I moved to Washington from Hawaii almost three years ago and will be a senior this upcoming year. I spend much of my time competing and practicing for my FFA competitions, including Veterinary Science, Employment Skills, and Prepared Public Speaking. Outside of FFA, I like hanging out with my friends and traveling to new places. I hope to learn a lot about aviation and airport operations during this internship so eventually I can become an A&P Mechanic!

Taxiway Alpha Mill and Overlay Construction Update

Our Taxiway A Improvements project began on April 30th and is off to a great start. We appreciate your understanding as we complete Taxiway A and Taxiway Connectors A2 and A3 pavement rehabilitation, as well as reconstruction of Taxiway Connectors A1 and A4 per FAA and WSDOT standards. The total project duration has increased to 95 working days and work is divided into four phases with subphases that will have varying impacts to airport operations. A working day is generally any day Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

As construction progresses, we would like to inform tenants of upcoming impacts (including closures). We will continue to update and issue NOTAMs and notices as we approach Phase 2 completion.

Phase 3 is scheduled to begin on July 7th and be completed within 34 working days. This phase will take place between Arlington Flight Services and the A4 Taxiway connector, with Arlington Flight Services remaining accessible. The A4 area will undergo complete reconstruction, and the area south of Vertex Aviation will be milled and overlaid. Airport Operations will work with the project engineer to create a milling road north of A4 in the grass, connecting to the Runway 16 threshold. This will allow tenants on the north end to taxi or be towed across this area at the pilot’s discretion (larger aircraft should coordinate with airport operations). If located south of Vertex Aviation, pilots can taxi or be towed south on a milled surface, with coordination from airport staff. During this project, if you would like to tie down on the ramp to avoid construction, please contact the airport office. Thank you for your patience as we complete this project.

Note: Airport staff recommends utilizing FAA NOTAM search site as ForeFlight publishes the notices in a confusing manner.
