Did You Know?
What do you know about Pierre L’Enfant, the architect/city planner of Washington, DC?
- He was born in Paris in 1754
- He studied architecture at the Royal Academy, Paris - 1771-1776.
- He enlisted in the French Army as a Lieutenant.
- In 1777, he volunteered for service in the Continental Army, to help the American insurgents fighting for freedom from Britain.
- Like Lafayette, he took no salary and covered his own expenses.
- He served on General Washington’s staff at Valley Forge and rose to the rank of Major in the Corps of Engineers.
- L’Enfant designed several buildings in New York as well as the medal for the Society of Cincinnati.
- In 1791, President Washington appointed L’Enfant to design the new “Federal City”.
- He drew his inspiration for the National Mall from Le Nôtre, landscape architect of Versailles. He selected the place for the Capitol and the White House.
- L’Enfant died poor on June 14, 1825 and was buried in a friend’s garden. Fortunately, he was re-interred in front of Arlington House in 1909 in a ceremony attended by President William Howard Taft and many other dignitaries.
In the 19th Century, Paris was redesigned by the Baron Haussman, who was inspired by the wide avenues and beautiful gardens of Pierre L’Enfant’s design for Washington.
