Dear Friends of ASCA:
It is back to school time! Even if you do not have children in school, or that time has passed, it still prompts us to think about fall—cooler weather, pumpkins, cider, and for ASCA, school exchanges! Currently, each program is making their decisions on the exchanges for the 2022-23 year. Decision factors include interest of our sister city, parent and student interest in Arlington, the ever-changing status of Covid protocols and most important a volunteer to plan the exchanges.
I am pleased to announce that ASCA is welcoming our first exchange in over three years with the Aachen Fifth Grade Exchange students traveling to Arlington at the end of September. Over forty families will visit Arlington Public Schools, our museums, and the region. Huge thanks to Sapna Delacourt who volunteered to lead the event this year, and Heidi Addison who assisted by passing on what she has learned from years of volunteerism with ASCA.
Regrettably, the Reims Sister City has decided not to hold exchanges just yet.
Community and parent involvement in planning and executing our programs is key to having a successful program. ASCA operates with a volunteer board and volunteer sister city committees. This year, ASCA will not be able to consider our Aachen high school exchanges because we do not have a volunteer to lead the effort. If you have any interest, please reach out to us at admin@arlingtonsistercities.org. We provide training, and Board and committee support.
In the meantime, be on the lookout for San Miguel virtual exchanges and other programs coming up soon!!

The International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen (Der Internationale Karlspreis zu Aachen) is the oldest and best-known prize awarded for work done in the service of European unification. It has been awarded since 1950 by the German city of Aachen. It commemorates Charlemagne, ruler of the Frankish Empire revered by his contemporaries as the “Father of Europe and founder of what became the Holy Roman Empire, who resided and is buried in Aachen. Traditionally the award is given to the recipient on Ascension Day in a ceremony in the town hall of Aachen. The prize is announced each March and awarded in May.
Recent winners of the Charlemagne Prize include:
- Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, Veronica Tsepkalo and Maria Kalesnikava (2022), Belarusian political activists
- Klaus Iohannis (2020/21), Romanian politician, physicist and former teacher, president of Romania
- António Guterres (2019) Portuguese politician and diplomat, secretary-general of the United Nations

ASCA and the Arlington Knights of Columbus virtually welcomed Documentary Photographer Jana Rajcova who presented her Exodus.Report project. The report tells the stories through photographs of Ukrainian refugees who have found safety in Slovakia since Russia's full-scale invasion began.
Over 60 people attended the event to watch the virtual presentation and enjoy camaraderie over local cuisine.
Thanks to the Arlington Knights of Columbus for hosting the event!!
