Armenian Remembrance Event

On May 23, 2023, Oakwood Cemetery Heritage Foundation will hold an Armenian Remembrance event. Join us at Oakwood at 5 p.m. as we welcome guests of Armenian descent who will share their families’ stories graveside.

More than 400 people of Armenian descent rest at Oakwood, many of whom were first- or second-generation Americans. Their ancestors fled the Armenian genocide, arriving in Niagara Falls in great numbers from the late 1890’s to post WWI. Before and after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the Armenian population went from being marginalized to persecuted to driven out into the desert. Many helped forge the community here and their names remain familiar: Mooradian, Hagopian, Garabedian, Sarkissian, and so many more.

Today their descendants are our neighbors. Join Oakwood Board of Directors Vice President Bob Kazeangin, Dawn Sakalian, Assistant Project Director of the documentary project “SURVIVE, REMEMBER, THRIVE” which discusses the history of Armenian traditions in Western New York, and others as they share their families’ stories of finding a new life in Niagara Falls.

Join us for a coffee and Armenian paklava reception in the Oakwood House immediately following the tour. The event is free.

If you ever have any questions orwould like to share your family's story, Contact Oakwood Cemetery Heritage Foundation.

Sincerely,
