Friends,

The past couple of days have been beautiful weather-wise, and thankfully my job has had me out and about enjoying it, from celebrating the groundbreaking of Pedro Park to taking our esteemed City Councilmembers on a walking tour of downtown. It was a great opportunity to experience both the beauty and the opportunity of downtown Saint Paul, and I'm excited about what's in store.

City Council also held a public hearing this week on the creation of the new Downtown Improvement District that would span all four corners of downtown. I'm appreciative of everyone who came out to engage in the process, and while there were questions and concerns shared, the overall passion for our downtown community and desire to bring additional services to Lowertown and other areas not currently served by the district were evident. We anticipate that City Council will vote on the creation of the new district next week.

I also want to thank the 200+ downtown workers who volunteered at the downtown cleanup day this past Tuesday, representing every department from the City of Saint Paul and numerous downtown organizations and businesses. Our work made a big difference; thank you to the City for organizing this effort.

Whatever it is, Harriet Island has a long history as a place for music festivals. Some of the biggest names — from Bob Dylan and Van Morrison to Whitney Houston and Pearl Jam — have performed as part of fests on this bucolic park.

Here's a look back at those music fests.
