‘TIS THE SEASON ...
It's time for us to wrap up 2018, CLOC's 65th Anniversary Year. What a milestone for the organization! And what a busy year it has been.
As we look look forward to 2019, we'd like to share some news, stories and adventures with you from the past 12 months, along with some tidbits and teasers for the new year.
I am thankful to each of you, for the support that you give to CLOC, and I am proud to be part of an organization that continues to strive
for people with developmental disabilities to be included in a community where everyone lives, works, participates, succeeds and flourishes.
Happiest of the Holiday Season to you and your families,

CLOC DEBUTS NEW MISSION & VISION STATEMENTS
On September 18, 2018 at CLOC's Annual General Meeting, revisions to CLOC's Mission & Vision statements were introduced. These new statements were created as part of the Strategic Planning Process, where it was realized that it was time to update our wording. The new wording reads as follows:
MISSION
CLOC is a charitable organization offering opportunities for personal growth, community inclusion and empowerment to people with developmental disabilities, and their families.
VISION
CLOC’s vision is for people with developmental disabilities to be included in a community where everyone lives, works, participates, succeeds and flourishes.

SEEKING INSPIRATIONAL STORIES
Have you met Cathy Garacci, the Secretary of CLOC's Board of Directors? Cathy is a family member of a person who receives services from CLOC. Many years ago Cathy worked for CLOC as the Manager of the Supported Employment program. She also has experience working as a newspaper reporter.
Cathy is interested in meeting all of the people we support at Community Living Oshawa/Clarington, and would love to help them share their experiences in CLOC's newsletters, social media and on CLOC's website. If you know someone who is comfortable in relaying their unique story; how they became involved with CLOC, the supports they have received and the achievements they have reached, Cathy would like to get together to write a story with them, and help inspire others to believe in their goals and do it “their way”.

Just part of the group of people who came out to honour Vivette and the impact that she has had on CLOC and the people we serve.

Annie Shorten Award Winner - Vivette Smith
On March 20th, Community Living Oshawa/Clarington presented the Annie Shorten Award to Vivette Smith, who has been a family home provider with the organization for almost 30 years.
The Annie Shorten Achievement Award honours people who have made a significant contribution to the lives of people served by CLOC through a unique achievement or outstanding service, as a member, volunteer, associate or employee of CLOC, in any area that provides a benefit to persons with a developmental disability.
Many employees, past and present, that have worked with Vivette over the years told stories about Vivette as part of the the award presentation, including Paul Woodcroft (former employee), Andre laFlamme (former employee), Suzanne Nobes and Petrina Peyton. Vivette's family and some of the people that have lived with her over the years were also on hand to say thank you. There wasn't a dry eye in the house!

John Strange Award Winner - Paul Dodgson
For almost 20 years, Paul Dodgson was a dedicated volunteer at CLOC. He provided support to people within CLOC’s day programs, both in groups and individually, bringing with him a kind, gentle nature and a quirky sense of humour. For the past few years, Paul has volunteered twice a week at the day program at our 39 Wellington location, adamant that people experience some form of physical exercise. Paul has been leading a stretching circle, where people use combined movements from yoga and martial arts, to move their bodies while seated.
CLOC made the decision to present Paul with this award in early 2018. Ironically, before we had the chance to tell him, Paul announced that he would be retiring from his volunteer work on his 75
th
birthday, in order to spend more time with his family. So the timing was perfect! Thank you for everything you did for CLOC, Paul!

WRAPPING UP A CLOC-TASTIC 65th YEAR
If you didn't make it out to the Family/Membership meeting in November, you missed out on some great fun! Attendees were given a 'Passport' to visit several stations around the room, and each station had a video that presented photographs from some of the significant events that have taken place over this Anniversary year. At the end of the evening, a draw for a beautiful Christmas basket was held, and was won by the Klinowski family.
But don't fret if you missed it..... the beautiful presentations, put together by Wendy Shaw, are linked below, and they will be debuting on social media over the end of December & early January. Feel free to share with your friends!

Raucous Riders Motorcycle Club Donate a Swing for Kadan
Kadan is a young man who loves to swing. When his support worker, Danielle, identified that it would be nice for Kadan to have a swing at his home, the Raucous Riders Motorcycle Club jumped on board and began fundraising for a specialized adult swing, so Kadan would be safe and secure. The Raucous Riders raised more than enough to fund Kadan's swing, and generously gave Kadan the rest of the funds so he can purchase some much needed new clothing and shoes.
On Saturday October 13th, the Raucous Riders delivered Kadan's new swing, and installed it in the yard of Kadan's home. The staff that works at the home baked goodies and made sandwiches to ensure that the Club was well fed and kept warm on the chilly day.
Thank you to the Raucous Riders Motorcycle Club, and the staff at Kadan's home that helped to bring this project together. The smile on Kadan's face says it all!

Help make a difference in the life of a person who has a developmental disability this holiday season.
When you donate to Community Living Oshawa/Clarington, you help to ensure that more children, adults and their families receive the individualized support they need.
How your donations will make a difference:
•Allow CLOC to make necessary accessibility construction and renovations to meet the changing needs of the people we support. For example, help us to widen doorways, update air circulation systems. Improve heating and air conditioning systems and replace worn roofs.
•Provide support for youth still in school to develop the skills necessary for living and thriving in our community.
•Provide essential respite opportunities for families and support systems for aging parents.
•Provide opportunities for people to participate fully within our community by assisting with transportation or annual passes for recreational facilities.
•Supporting adults to live full, active lives.
Make wishes and hopes come true for people who might not otherwise have the opportunity to make them happen. For example a trip to Nashville, or a new residence to live independently in; just two of the many wishes and hopes we have made happen.
