NEWS

APRIL 26, 2025

On April 26, 2025, the New York Police Department Emerald Society Pipes and Drums held its annual Saint Patrick’s Day dance at Mount Saint Michael’s Academy in the Bronx.

Our good friend Patrick Hendry, President of the NYCPBA, was honored as the Man of the Year. Brian Coughlan, our GCUES 2017 Irishman of the Year and 2017 Grand Marshal’s Aide to Michael J. Dowling, was awarded the prestigious Sergeant John Tansey Award

MAY 7, 2025

President Martin Bellew presided over the attendance of the Emerald Delegation at the National Police Defense Association’s 30th Anniversary Dinner. The sold-out event, which featured 750 attendees, was held on Wednesday, May 8, 2025, at Russo’s on the Bay, situated in Howard Beach, New York. The honorees included the 2025 Man of the Year, Thomas “Tom” Homan, the US Border Czar, and the 2025 Woman of the Year, Admiral Zeita Merchant, the U.S. Coast Guard. Special Recognition to Joe Occhipinti, the Founder and Executive Director of the NPDF, for his unwavering support towards the Law Enforcement community and their families.

The National Police Defense Foundation (NPDF) is a nationally recognized and congressionally recognized IRS-approved 501(c)(3) organization that provides complimentary medical and legal assistance to the law enforcement community. Additionally, the NPDF funds various public safety and law enforcement initiatives.

The NPDF was established in 1995 by retired Federal Agent Joseph Occhipinti and his wife, Angela, as a response to the increasing trend of dedicated law enforcement officials becoming targets of heightened armed assaults and fabricated misconduct allegations perpetrated by criminal elements. Occhipinti, who had served as a PBA President for 18 years, recognized the paramount importance of establishing a non-profit police foundation to safeguard and support the efforts of law enforcement officials across the nation.

Today, the National Police Defense Foundation (NPDF) has amassed over 210,000 members and supporters across the nation. Furthermore, NPDF membership and representation have been expanded internationally to encompass Asia, Europe, South America, Central America, the Caribbean, and the Middle East. What distinguishes the NPDF is its unique approach of offering membership to both civilians and professionals with the objective of fostering positive police relations.

I extend an invitation to all Emeralds, family members, and friends to join and support this remarkable organization. The NPDF membership is open to active or retired public safety officers, civilians and professionals, business and corporate entities, and students.
