February 2017

Our Chief Cheer Officer, Mac, has been busy getting acquainted to the House, our families, volunteers and staff since he joined us in early January.  For the health and well-being of everyone, including Mac, we have a few guidelines we would like to share.
  • Very important: Under no circumstances should Mac be given human food or allowed in the kitchen/dining room areas.
  • Mac must always supervised by a staff member who has been trained on how to work with him.  He is not allowed to roam the House unleashed.
  • When interacting with guests, Mac must be "given permission" to approach guests.  He cannot be allowed to approach people without invitation.  Guests may initiate interaction with Mac.
  • Thank you Andrea Groves, Beth Johnson, Kelly Thien, Krystyna Karr, Lisa Lusk, Michelle Study-Campbell, Patti Cooper, Peg Strodtbeck, Savannah Ball and Sonya Robinson for taking the training to care for Mac.

Help Deserving High School Seniors Afford the Education of Their Dreams!
RMHCCIN is seeking volunteers to participate in our annual scholarship review.  Since 2008, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana has awarded more than $800,000 in scholarships to high school seniors in financial need who have demonstrated academic achievement, leadership and community involvement through our RMHC Scholarship Program. Each year RMHCCIN receives hundreds of applications and volunteers are needed to help evaluate candidates on established criteria provided, including: academic achievement, personal statement short essay, leadership involvement and commitment to community service.  Application screenings will take place mid-March through April. Evaluations will take approximately two hours to complete and can be done from the convenience of your own home or office.
To be a part of this rewarding opportunity, please contact Kelly Thien at (317) 267-0605 ext. 207 or at kthien@rmhccin.org no later than Thursday, March 2.
Help Needed

Though additional Guest Services Volunteers are always needed we are rolling out some new and exciting opportunities and need your help!
  • Guest Services Volunteers to substitute as needed.  You can determine your availability and people would contact you directly to see if you might be available.
  • An additional van driver to drive families needing to go to Walmart or Meijer. Ideally, this person is available every other Thursday but there is flexibility in the schedule.
  • Bingo callers are needed every other week in the evening.
  • Meal makers to come in on a regular basis and make side dishes and small casseroles that will be frozen for use later.

The following opportunities have different time commitments.  Some will only take 30-60 minutes every other week so they are a great way to help before or after your guest services shift.

  • Help keep the pantries organized and stocked.
  • Help with keeping our linen inventory organized and make linen packets.
  • Sorting through a variety of donated items such as clothes, games, dolls, holiday gifts and more, that can be used for guest events gifts/prizes and guest availability.
  • Write 1-3 thank you cards to donors before or after shift.
Please contact Mary Friend at mfriend@rmhccin.org or 317-267-0605, x 225 if you are interested in learning more about any of these opportunities.

Mission Moment

"Thank you for the wonderful room and comfy bed last night.  I can be a better mom upstairs now that I have had some good sleep.  It is nice to have a place to just let go and not have to be 'strong'"

Operations Update - Limestone

Security is a priority for us.  The following procedures are being implemented to ensure that the House is a secure facility:

  • New security check-in procedures have been instituted for everyone who enters the House. Staff and volunteers are required to wear their nametags at all times. Service/meal groups, maintenance/delivery personnel and visitors will sign in and will be given the appropriate badge.
  • Part of this new security system means that one volunteer from each shift will need to cover the greeter desk at all times.  It is very important that someone is at the greeter desk to help check badges and distribute badges as needed. Please check the "Volunteer Needs to Know" binder for more details.
  • Effective immediately, staff and volunteers can call IU Health Security at 317-962-8000 to request rides to Riley, Indiana University or Methodist Hospitals for all houseguests.  Transportation is available at any hour of the day. Please discourage guests from calling security for rides directly as this can impact our agreement. Inform guests that there can be a wait depending upon how many calls security has received.
