Goodbye from Rhonda Hainer

Recently, Rhonda Hainer submitted her resignation. We are thankful for Rhonda's service and wish her the best in her future endeavors. Below is a note from Rhonda to you, our volunteers:

To all of you wonderful volunteers, I want to share with you that it is time for me to move on. My last day was Friday, June 8th.  I say so long, farewell, God's blessings.

I will miss you all. I have appreciated your contribution to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana, especially at the Riley location.

It has been my joy and honor to get to know you and work alongside you. I wish you well. I wish you peace.

Thank you,

Rhonda

Join Us Under The Stars for This Year's Volunteer Celebration

We are excited to host this year's volunteer celebration on Friday, August 10 at Symphony on the Prairie at Conner Prairie beginning at 6 p.m. All registered volunteers will receive an invitation and are welcome to bring a guest. We have reserved the Bayt Pavilion where we will have dinner and a short program. Then, join us for a delightful evening under the stars as we enjoy the musical stylings of  Classical Mystery Tour: Music of the Beatles. The night includes more than two dozen Beatles tunes performed exactly as they were originally recorded, from the early Beatles on through "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and "Let It Be." The second half of the concert features a tribute to The White Album, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

Invitations will be mailed soon but please mark your calendars now!

Suggestion Box Comments and Responses

In the front office area, at both locations, there is a suggestion box for volunteers to submit their ideas and comments.  Stacy Payne Miller, Chief Operating Officer, responds to some of your questions and suggestions below.

Suggestion: More happiness. Paint so people feel happier when here. But, the place is already nice currently :)

We agree! We will be painting the entire interior of our Limestone Street location over the next few months.

Suggestion:  I think RMH should rethink the volunteers who check rooms doing bedspreads and mattress covers. Many of us are older or have a physical condition that make it very hard. Also, quite often the room is only used one night.

We hear you!  We've created more convenient spaces both upstairs and downstairs that house extra bedspreads and mattress covers to help eliminate basement trips and carrying the items.  To adhere to cleanliness standards, we must change the bedspread and mattress cover after each stay.  However, staff is happy to help with these task as well. Your safety and well-being is important to us so we would never ask you to do something that may be harmful to you.

Suggestion:  Free Cokes in the Coke Machine.

You got it - sort of!  Volunteers are welcome to help themselves to a beverage out of the refrigerator in the conference room.

Our volunteers are at the heart of what we do and we truly value all of your feedback! We hope you will continue to utilize the suggestion boxes so that we can answer any questions and better serve you!
Operational Updates

Need to Miss a Shift?

We understand that our Guest Services Volunteers are all juggling various commitments and may not be able to serve on every shift they are scheduled. If you find that you are unable to report for your scheduled shift, please remember to do the following:
  • Please call the Manager on Duty if you need to cancel at the last minute. Emails are not always read immediately so always call the location where you are scheduled to volunteer and notify the Manager on Duty.
  • If you know you will need to miss a future shift, please notify Mary Friend. Mary manages the schedules before they are posted so she can remove you from the schedule before it is even printed. Please do not expect your shift mate to tell us of your absence.
  • Whenever possible, if you need to miss a shift, see what you can do to find a substitute. An updated list of GSVs willing to cover for others is included in the monthly volunteer newsletter. Please try to find a replacement or switch shifts with someone else. The House runs much smoother when we have adequate staffing. If you cannot find someone to cover your open shift we will try to make the necessary adjustments to cover the House but your help in contacting those who have offered to sub is greatly appreciated.
  • If you would like to add your name to the substitute list, please notify Mary Friend. You can declare which shifts you are available.
Updated Checkout Checklist

We recently updated the checklist outlining what to do when a family checks out and have added a couple of items:
  • Remember to ask the family to complete an exit survey. Their feedback is very important to us.
  • Make sure there is a supply of thank you cards available when you are preparing a room for the next family. A written thank you from the family to the room sponsor goes a long way and is greatly appreciated!
  • Please look for the journal that is left in each of the guest rooms when you are preparing the room for the next family. These journals allow families to pass along their thoughts, concerns and experiences onto the next family staying in that room. If you cannot find the journal, please replace it.
Welcome to the Future!

You will notice a white, futuristic looking device sitting in the front office very soon. This device is our new cash register. We will be training staff on how to operate the new register first and then will start training our Guest Services Volunteers (GSVs). Until GSVs have received training, please ask the Manager on Duty to run any transactions. Once we have completed our transition to the new register, we will be training GSVs and post the details in the "Need to Know" binder.
Volunteers Needed
  • We are looking to grow our team of coffee cart hosts on Thursday mornings from 9-11:30 a.m. You can choose to serve weekly, every other week, or from time to time. Because you will be serving coffee to families on the patient floors, you will need to complete the on-boarding process for Riley Hospital.
Wonder what it is like to volunteer on the coffee cart? Hear from current coffee cart hosts.

Everyone is so grateful and appreciative. It's not often that you can improve someone's day with such a simple gesture. ~ Marie Shea

I enjoy working on the coffee cart because you get to interact with families, the doctors and nurses. You also get to see what goes on in the hospital. The families really appreciate the coffee, tea and hot chocolate. ~ Joe Gault

The parents are ALWAYS most appreciative of our offerings. They don't like leaving their sick kiddos and don't want to miss the doctors. I enjoy walking around the hospital. It gives me a better appreciation of what I have and how lucky I am with my own children and grandchildren. I really enjoy the happy and sweet faces of the kids. They always bring a smile to my face. ~ Nancy Iles

  • We need additional volunteers at our Riley location mainly during the lunch hour (12-3 p.m.). You will be assisting with the check-in process, setting up lunch and light clean up. Meals are already prepared, no cooking necessary.
  • We are always in need of additional volunteers, especially Guest Services Volunteers. Our next new volunteer orientation will be on Wednesday, July 11 from 6 to 9 p.m.

For more information about these opportunities or if you know someone who would like to join us, contact Mary Friend at [email protected] or 317-267-0605, ext. 225.

  • GOOOOOOAL! We have been invited to participate in an exciting 3V3 Soccer Tournament Fundraiser on Saturday, June 23rd in McCordsville, IN. We will need volunteers to assist with concessions and side games that will help us raise additional funds. The event will be all day (8 a.m. - 5 p.m.) but shifts will be available. Please keep an eye out for additional information as it becomes available or email Manpreet Dhillon, Marketing & Development Associate, at [email protected] for more information or to sign-up to volunteer.
Yoga Anyone?

Houseguests, volunteers and staff are welcome to join our complimentary yoga classes on the first Monday of each month from 7-8 p.m. The next class will be held on Monday, July 2 so please join us! Thank you Kelly Alford from The Yoga Studio for your generous donation.
Look Who Was Caught Rolling Out The Red Carpet

Patti Cooper, House Operations Associate, caught Steve Schilling, Guest Services Volunteer at Limestone Street, demonstrating cooperation, communication and teamwork.

Patti wrote: "New to the RMH family, Steve has jumped in head first! He's been willing to do anything needed to make sure the guests have a positive experience in the House. In the month of May, he volunteered many extra hours to cover where we had gaps in the the front office!"

Thank you, Steve. We appreciate your friendliness and compassion!

Congratulations! Your Crew Carwash pass is in the mail.

Remember, if you catch a volunteer rolling out the red carpet and providing an excellent family experience, please submit a nomination using the form below. Printed copies of this form are also available in the front office at both Limestone and Riley. Each month, all nominations are eligible for a random drawing for a Crew Carwash pass.
