Bags 4 My Cause Program
GIANT food store has selected the Allentown Rescue Mission for their “Bags 4 My Cause Program” for the month of February. For the entire month, every time the reusable $2.50 “Bags 4 My Cause Bag” is sold at the GIANT, the Allentown Rescue Mission will receive a $1 donation. The store that chose the Allentown Rescue Mission as their non-profit is located at 3015 West Emmaus Avenue, Allentown PA. When you purchase a bag at this location, the $1 donation automatically goes to the Allentown Rescue Mission. You can also purchase your bag at any other GIANT food store location and give back as well. All you have to do is buy the bag and follow the directions on the tag. It’s that simple to give back!

Stop in at GIANT and help the environment and the Allentown Rescue Mission! Every dollar earned goes right back to helping homeless and hungry men in the Greater Lehigh Valley! Can’t make it to GIANT, send a donation directly through our website.
Your Donations at Work
Two donations to the Allentown Rescue Mission helped the men get ready to watch some football! Papa John’s in Trexlertown and a donation of Little Caesars pizzas were donated to the Allentown Rescue Mission in order to help feed our men.

Papa John’s in Trexlertown donated 55 pizzas to feed the men at the Allentown Rescue Mission. After Papa John’s conducted a large event, they had extra pizzas and employee Joshua Pfeiffer insisted on bringing the pizzas to the Allentown Rescue Mission instead of letting them go to waste. After Josh received the store’s approval he took it upon himself to transport them here to feed our guys.

A donation of Little Caesars pizzas helped ensure that our men had enough food during the Super Bowl! A donation of 60 pizzas was given to the Allentown Rescue Mission on February 2nd, just in time for the Super Bowl.

We would like to thank Papa John’s for their pizza donation, and to thank the donors of the Little Caesars pizzas for their donation. Although it may sound cheesy, we really appreciate your support as any donation helps our men!

Lives Changed
Many people in the community are familiar with the Allentown Rescue Mission’s “Clean Team”, however, many are not aware the real work experiences provided to Clean Team employees in the Mission’s facility itself. Two of those work experiences are highlighted in Brian & Ashley’s stories.
Clean Team Kitchen Assistant – Brian

Brian came to the Allentown Rescue Mission in late 2019 after losing his most recent job. Years of bad decisions and a marriage turned bad- led Brian to alcohol and to self-medicate – which made things worse. He lost everything. Brian went through the Transformation Program, and upon graduation had expected to work a labor job in the community, through the Clean Team. However, another opening popped up – a spot as a kitchen assistant in the Food Service Department!

Prior to Brian’s stay at the Allentown Rescue Mission, he had worked in various food service professions as a cook for a local hospital network, personal kitchen staff for a local celebrity, as well as over 20 years as a cook for a charity that delivers meals to seniors. When this spot opened - Brian was a natural fit. One of the things Brian looks forward to is finding his own place to live and he hopes his hard work in the Food Service Department could earn him a permanent position in the kitchen.
Clean Team Shelter Associate – Ashley Wesley

Ashley also came to the Allentown Rescue Mission in 2019. After losing his job at a local production facility, his relationship with his 3-year-old son’s mother had started to turn sour – to the point where he could no longer stay there. Hopeless and jobless Ashley came to us for help.

He entered the Transformation Program where he learned skills need to succeed in the community. After graduating, Ashley originally found employment at FedEx – but the job didn’t work out and he came back on to the Clean Team.

While employed as a laborer on the Clean Team, a need arose in the Allentown Rescue Mission’s Emergency Shelter that a Clean Team employee could fill – and Ashley stepped into that role as his assignment. He’s currently working 5 days a week in the shelter assisting with shelter operations.

Ashley looks forward to finding permanent work in the community – potentially in the warehousing field, and becoming reunited with his son.

News and Events
In January, WFMZ TV twice featured the Allentown Rescue Mission with events that were happening in and around the Mission. These news stories discussed the Clean Team and the first “I AM” award ceremony.

The first news story featured the Clean Team. It discussed the projects the Clean Team has done and are currently working on. It also included a quote from a former employer of the Clean Team in which he discusses the quality of the work the Clean Team provides.

The second news story discusses the first “I AM” award ceremony that was held in January to celebrate the 30 year partnership with Arc of Lehigh and Northampton Counties (the disabilities support organization for our area). This video shows a packed chapel, talks about the events that occurred, and shows the recipients accepting the award as they gather for photos at the joyous and memorable event!
