USMS Summer Nationals
New England swimmers traveled to Richmond, VA in August for long course fun at USMS Summer Nationals. Highlights included watching the first ever swimmer to compete in the men's 100 - 104 age bracket.

Read Christian Avard's recap of his first nationals experience here. Christian (NEM), competing in the 50-54 men's age group, met his goals, improved his times, earned 7th place in the 50 back and 10th in the 50 breast, and had a blast doing it!

Chuck Barnes (NEM) set 2 national records
  • Men's 45-49 50 backstroke -- 28.01 (USMS record)
  • Men's 45-49 200 backstroke -- 2:13.21 (USMS record)

The Lowell Sun profiled Jim Pope (NEM) and his successful run at Nationals. Jim, age 80, swam 5 events, winning the 200 IM and the 400 IM. Jim said of his races: "I like the 200 back because I think it is my best stroke. On the other hand, the 400 IM gives me the greatest feeling of accomplishment because it is so hard."

Glen Lake Swim Episode 4: The Beast from Loch Glen
The Glen Lake Swim, Episode 4: The Beast from Loch Glennie was held in Goffstown, NH on August 14th. It was a beautiful sunny day with water temperatures at 77 degrees, making it perfect for swimming. The Glen Lake Swim comes with a subtitle each year. The first year was “The Search For Glennie,” episode 2 was called “Glennie Rises,” and last year was “Glennie Strikes Back,” which put a Star Wars spin on the Glennie story. Glennie is the friendly plesiosaur-like creature that has been trapped in Glen Lake since the Gregg’s Falls Dam was constructed in 1918.

Wild Bill Swim Challenge
The first annual "Wild Bill" Swim Challenge was held in August to honor and remember Dr. William "Wild Bill" Yorzyk, (1933-2020) a local from Northampton, MA. Yorzyk won Olympic Gold in 1956 in the 200m Butterfly and is attributed with 'inventing' the infamous dolphin kick, along with his Springfield College Coach Red Silvia.
