Around the Parish
March 2018

We enjoyed having our Boy Scout Troop 28 with us for National Scouting Sunday!

St. Luke's Girl Scout Troop 8085 participated in Girl Scout Thinking Day. They chose the country India. They had to teach other troops about this country and do a performance. For their performance the girls learned an Indian poem and recited it in the Hindi language. They also learned about many other countries from other girl scout troops.
We want to thank everyone who helped make the Safe Haven weekend a success! The ladies from McKemie Place were very grateful.

In Your Hearing
Bishop Russell, in his introduction to the second week of our Luke readings, talks about Jesus reading in the synagogue (Luke 4:16-21)( BpRussell_Luke5-7  “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing .”
Bishop Russell reminded me of my own journey. I began lecturing back in the early 90’s. I was extremely nervous. My church in Atlanta was established in 1926, and some of the original families still attend. I did not want to make mistakes in the expected way of doing things, and thereby disrupt people’s worship. I prepared all week for my reading. But frequently someone would come up after service and say how much my reading had meant to them. Since I knew that I had stumbled over a word or missed a cadence, it was very apparent that my reading was not the issue. It had to be God in their hearing.
Bishop Russell goes on to say that the power of the sermon [and the scripture reading/gg] is in the listener. I pray that God will help me to be a good listener.
One of the highlights of the 47 th Central Gulf Coast Diocesan Convention was Bishop Russell Kendrick’s opening address, shared here:

From the Diocesan Convention
The Noonday Prayer sermon at the Diocesan Convention this weekend was a little unconventional. It was a video of a sermon by Brene’ Brown, given at the National Cathedral January 21, 2018. This address is well worth your time. We hope that you enjoy it as much as we did! (Click on the link )
