November 23, 2016

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving!  With all the complaints about the war on Christmas, you'd think more folks would be complaining about the war on this particular holiday too.  It used to be one that was spent with family and friends.  It was even a time that folks went to church to actually give God thanks for all the many blessings we've received.  But it has morphed into a day of gorging and excess.  (Not that there's anything wrong with a little pigging out from time to time!)  And unfortunately the "reason for the day" has now become just the day that officially kicks off the mad rush to Christmas.  This practice even interrupts Thanksgiving dinner - a meal that is supposed to be at the heart of the day itself. It is a stark example of how our common life has been hijacked by consumerism.

As we gathered last Sunday to share our parish's "Family Thanksgiving" I was once again struck by the many folks who expressed thanksgiving for our parish family.  Our shared life together is something to be cherished and honored and supported.  And as was pointed out, there is no guarantee that we will all be able to gather again the same time next year.  So hold on to those who are dear.  Give thanks to for those who have made a difference.  Make it a priority to be more regular in church - especially as we gear up for Christmas.

As the new Church year begins I'd like to invite you to partner with me in something.  I've been making a special request in my prayer time and I hope you might make it a part of your prayer time too.  My prayer is that by the end of next year we will have 75 folks worshiping regularly each week.  In order to achieve this goal, we'd have to do some stretching. It might mean that we actually work at getting folks to be a bit more regular, because you see the truth is, we already have that many names on our weekly sign-in sheet.  We just need to get folks into the habit of church rather than in the habit of skipping.

My prayer is that we might make this actually happen because I believe it could change each and every one of us for the better.

Happy New (Church) Year and Thanksgiving Blessings!

Fr. Dewayne

Advent Preparation Series
Wednesdays at 6:16
(Begins November 30th)

Beginning at 6:15 pm NEXT Wednesday (November 30th) we'll be offering a mid-week Advent preparation group this year. The gatherings will include a build-your-own-sandwich meal.

If you would like a book, we have 1 book left.  (You can download the books via AmazonSmile).  The price for the books are $8.

A suggested donation of $5 helps defray the cost of the meal and will serve as the seed money for the next week's gathering.

Food Donations Being Collected for Christmas Food Baskets

During Advent, the St. Jerome family has a tradition of bringing food donations, which will be used to assemble wonderful, generous Christmas food baskets for up to fifty recipient families.

Our Food Pantry will be purchasing the turkeys and hams, and they are asking us to provide the sides for a complete Christmas feast. Here are the items we put in the food gifts:
  • Cream of Mushroom soup
  • French Fried Onions (e.g. Durkee)
  • Stuffing
  • Broth (chicken or turkey)
  • Cranberry Sauce
  • Yams/Sweet Potatoes
  • Green Beans
The collection basket will be in place on the first Sunday of Advent, November 27. Thank you, St. Jerome parishioners, for your kind and generous donations to this joyous cause.

(PS: the above list can be found on your church app so that you'll have it handy when you go to the grocery store.)

Annual Church Meeting
December 11

Our annual church meeting will be held on December 11 after the morning worship service. Among other church business to be conducted, there will be the two elections: (1) New vestry members and a new Sr. Warden and (2) Three Lay Delegates for future Diocesan and ECC synods.

Vestry members - Any member of the parish may run for the Vestry. You may place your own name in nomination, or you may nominate someone who you believe to be gifted for that service to the church. Kathy Elliott and Danny Mackey have agreed to serve as the nominating Committee for this elections; if you have names to submit, please see either of them.

Lay Delegates - We need to elect three lay delegates to represent us at upcoming synods.  Our new diocesan synod will be held next spring, probably in March.   Again, you may volunteer or submit someone else's name.

If you want to place someone's name in nomination for either of these positions, it is kind to get that person's consent in advance.
