Tazzarin North to Nunatsiavut

Arrived in Halifax

2230 Thursday, September 7, 2023

I am writing later than usual. We have had a long day; but, it has brought us 87 miles to Halifax where we are tied to the dock at the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron (see picture above).

The day started at 0550 as we began the meandering route back out the river in Liscomb. The air was surprisingly still to start. The storm had departed and weakened and a blanket of fog took its place. Bob was at the wheel as we motored from bouy to bouy in the mist. Visibility gradually improved.

The sky became a patchwork of cloud, sun and rainshowers. Eventually a WNW breeze filled in allowing us to set some sail. We initially planned to use two days to reach Halifax. However. our progress was good and a decision made to push on all the way to Halifax. It would help make up for time lost due to two storms since leaving St. John's.

Our luck held and by sunset we were in the outer reaches of Halifax Harbour. I furled the mainsail as the sun touched the horizon. On the VHF radio I called Hallifax Vessel Traffic Control to let them know of our route. Halifax is a major port with container ships, tankers, freighters, naval ships and coast guard vessels moving about at all hours. Halifax Traffic responded politely and quickly, also giving us information on in and outbound traffic to help us stay clear of big ships. Overhead, I could see the stats Altair, Vega and Deneb - the three make up the "Summer Ttiangle;" soon the constellation will depart the early evening sky as fall takes hold and the season changes. It is time to get home.

Through the outer harbor, we turned and headed into the Northwest Arm of rhe harbor, a long, narrow Inlet that is the home of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron. by 2130 we had tied to the dock and completed the 87 mile day's run.

We will stay here tomorrow to get fuel, water, groceries and a couple items at the marine store, in particular, a new furling line for the jib.

Halifax feels close to home for me. I have probably sailed between here and Tazzarin's home port in Manchester, Massachusetts twenty times over the years. I feel home edging close, so does Tazzarin.
