This week
Ruth
It has been so wonderful to see you all coming back to our Libraries for our events. The Children's team is bouncing now that they can see their young audience enjoy all their songs and stories.

Our adult programs and clubs are starting up again in August. Yarnistas will be getting their yarn on tomorrow, so if you have an interest in knitting or crochet, feel free to drop by. Shut Up & Write will be writing words again on Thursday, as well. If you have an interest in writing anything, this may be the group for you.

We released a new Events brochure this week. For all our events, visit our Events & Programs page.

SALA launches tomorrow. The Libraries are supporting three fantastic artists, details are below, but the City of Unley is also hosting an online gallery. Check out some of the amazing art in our community.

For those of you following our online Storytimes, Wriggletimes and Babytimes, we have uploaded some new sessions today. See below for details.

Reboot is returning soon. We have released our first new One-on-one Tech Help sessions and I know there is a new brochure in the pipeline, so keep an eye out in coming weeks. Don't forget - if you would like to receive the Reboot Alert, which goes out each time a new Reboot brochure is released, you can subscribe!

See you in the Libraries...and at our events!

Jane Reilly & Peter Coombe visited our Libraries

The children's areas at both Unley and Goodwood Libraries were recently the filming location of a resource produced by Wellbeing SA for children titled Hi. This is Coronavirus.

Jane Reilly and Peter Combe both read the book that is available for download from the Wellbeing SA website, with some local kids excitedly joining us for the reading. We have been promoting this book at our children's sessions as a good way for parents to discuss this topic with their children.

We are excited to announce that the South Australian Living Artists Festival is happening again in August and you can find the incredible works of 3 artists at our Library branches.
Maggie Cecchin
Maggie Cecchin started painting after a career as a health professional and academic. When Maggie first picked up a paint brush, it was not without fear and a trembling hand. After hours exploring the relationship of brush, paint, surface and colour she discovered the joy of painting and determined to follow this passion … this became a new life for her. Maggie’s work can be seen at Unley Civic and Goodwood Libraries.
Suzie Messenger
Suzie Messenger is a retired teacher/librarian who has been creating yarn and textile pieces since the age of seven. Suzie’s tea cosies are a recent addition to her repertoire, wanting to take the tea pot cosy off craft trading tables and into a realm of whimsy and message. Her inspiration is taken from the form of the tea pot, an op shop find of vintage yarn, or creating something that hasn’t been done before. Suzie’s exhibition - ‘Tea For You Today’ is at Goodwood Library.
Helen Sherrif
Helen Sherriff is an award winning artist who graduated with Honours in Visual Art. Her techniques and traditions include painting, woodcarving, textiles, mosaics and iconography. ‘I often use old, even broken things, repurposed and redirected, as lives can be. The original brokenness works alongside the newness, adding strength.’ Helen’s exhibition is at Unley Civic Library.
Young Teen Book Club
This book club is for young teens/tweens aged 10 -14 years. Read a variety of genres, styles and subjects in middle grade and YA fiction. Challenge your reading, meet new friends, build your literacy, vocabulary and discussion skills, and improve critical thinking. Most importantly, have fun!

The Yield
by Tara June Winch

The Yield  weaves together three stories to reveal how Indigenous history carries forward pain and sorrow yet allows compassion, resilience, dignity, humour and humanity to flourish.

The Yield  explores the legacies of colonial violence, shame, intergenerational trauma and environmental destruction. Winch celebrates and amplifies the contemporary resurgence and relevance of the Wiradjuri language.  The Yield , a story of pain, loss, resilience and hope, is a novel where the past is the present is the future.”

She describes  The Yield  as a love letter: "It's a once-in-a-lifetime love letter to Australia."

Tech Help sessions are now available!

We are so pleased to announce that our one-on-one Tech Help appointments are now available! I know many of you have been waiting patiently to get back into the library with your questions, and get back into learning and improving your digital skills. We are so pleased to be able to help you again.

However, in this current climate we are having to take some extra precautions to make sure that we are keeping all our customers safe, as well as our staff and volunteers.

Therefore, we are implementing some compulsory hygiene measures for all Tech Help appointments, including:
  • Tech Help appointments will be held in our Tech Lab training room at Unley, instead of the usual space out in the library. This will enable us to spread out a little more.
  • Tutors will be wiping down surfaces, computers, and washing their hands in between customers. All appointments will need to finish on time, to allow the tutors time to clean in between appointments.
  • We ask that all customers sit alongside their tutor (not face-to-face) and give as much space that is reasonable and practical between you.
  • All customers must either wash their hands with soap and water or use hand sanitiser prior to their session. These facilities will be available to you in the Tech Lab.
  • If bringing your own device, all customers must wipe their device down with our cleaning wipes. These will be available to you, and are made especially for computer and tablet screens and keyboards.
  • Customers will be asked to handle their own devices as much as possible. When tutors are needing to handle any devices, they will be using their own stylus.
  • If you are unwell, please do not come in. Instead, please call the library on 8372 5100 and cancel your appointment. Library staff will do their best to reschedule your appointment where we can.

If you have any questions prior to your appointment, please don’t hesitate to call the library. We anticipate that there may be quite a demand for Tech Help again as it resumes so please be patient with appointment times. As per our normal process, all appointments are first-come, first-serve, and we are unable to offer any waiting lists. Due to an expected high demand, we ask that customers please do not book more than 2 appointments at any one time so that opportunities can be shared within our community.

Those of you who are eagerly awaiting our Reboot group classes, please know that we are working on those too and we will have an update very shortly. We thank you so much for your patience and welcome you back to our Reboot program!
