ART AROUND TOWN
From Venice With Love

The 59th International Art Exhibition opens to the public this Sunday, April 23, at the Venice Biennale. The exhibition features 213 artists from 58 countries, including Baltimore's own rising artist Monica Ikegwu. Monica has been featured on Oprah Winfrey Network's Cherish the Day produced by the Oscar-nominated Ava DuVernay.
Now, BOPA is supporting the next step in Monica’s career by coordinating her trip to the Venice Biennale. BOPA is acting as a fiscal sponsor of Galerie Myrtis as they pursue funding opportunities for both the Biennale and the Baltimore-based programming to follow. BOPA is honored to help Monica enjoy her well-deserved international accolades in person, and thrilled that a wider audience will be exposed to her incredible paintings.
The Venice Biennale, or Biennale di Venezia, began in 1895. It is one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in the world. But a biennale can be any large contemporary art exhibition held every two years. Biennales are typically named for their host city or, like the Whitney Biennale, a specific institution. Other popular biennales include the Gwangju Biennale in South Korea, the Bienal de São Paulo in Brazil, the Istanbul Biennale, and La Biennale de Lyon.
This Sunday, April 24, the European Cultural Centre-Italy (ECC) and Galerie Myrtis present an artists’ talk titled The Speculative Future of Blackness. The talk includes artists Tawny Chatmon, M. Scott Johnson, Delita Martin, and Arvie Smith, who are featured in The Afro-Futurist Manifesto: Blackness Reimagined at the Venice Biennale and exhibit curator, Myrtis Bedolla, Founding Director of Galerie Myrtis, who will moderate the discussion.
The program will be held in the main room of the Palazzo Michiel Strada Nova in Venice on Sunday, April 24, from 2:00–3:30 p.m. CEST (8:00 a.m. EST) and will be live-streamed on ECC's YouTube channel. Click below to watch.
