State of Flux
The exhibition includes work from Matt Fiske, Hideaki Miyamura, Sebastian Moh, Alex Thullen and John Tilton. Each of the five artists included in this exhibit are intensely interested in the glazes, glaze technology, and the chemistry of ceramics and glazing. These artists have taken a traditional technique and developed, reinterpreted, and applied it in such a way that a new existence is created. This exhibit explores the nuances and complexities of iridescent, Tenmoku, Celadon and crystalline glazing.

Have you ever been so inspired by somebody that you're seeing them everywhere? Gilda Snowden is somebody who can have that effect. Get a glimpse into her inspired state of mind. Anything you can think of in the city of Detroit, Gilda has been there, done that. Born and educated in Detroit, Gilda has become a local legend and internationally renowned artist. All the while she keeps her roots in Detroit, spreading her positivity and creative passion through her teaching & community involvement.

Gary Grimshaw: Solo

Grimshaw is a graphic artist who has an extraordinary history and character. At the start of his career Grimshaw became well known as the Grande Ballroom artist and later as the MC5 artist. These works stand out as the centerpiece of an enormously prolific output of art from the mid-1960's to the late 1970's. He became part of a dynamic collective of intellectuals, promoters, poets, artists, musicians-people who spent many years together in some form or another and in different circles of interest.

 

In recognition of his significant and lasting contributions to the arts, Grimshaw will be signing the historic beams of the Scarab Club. 

 

Opening Friday, January 10, 6-9pm. Beam signing 7:30pm.

In Other Places People Lived
Through a mix of photography, sculpture, video, and ceramics, Hutchinson and Tonning explore ideas of place and location. Both artists have spent time in the Rocky Mountain West and the Midwest. The images and objects contained within this show are the product of experiences spanning these geographical locations. Through the work, place is explored both as a fixed location, and an ever-changing environment.

Lawrence Street Gallery hosts the "best of the best" from 2013 juried art shows (Invitational, Figurative, Photography, and Think Small.) Jud Coveyou (Ferndale), Suzanne Rock (Leonard), Mary Ann Rutledge (Sterling Heights), James Ritchie (Northville), Jean Lannen (Bloomfield Township), Peter Tkacz (LaSalle, Ontario), Janet McCall Rimar (Clarkston), Brant MacLean (Detroit), Jonathon Downing (Carleton, and Rosemary Lee (Howell) are the participating artists.

 

Opening Friday, January 10, 6-9pm. 

 

Show runs through January 31 with a mid-month reception Friday, January 24.

 


 

Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center 

Terra Nullius (Land That Belongs to No One)
The work of five artists from the faculty of the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design of Ann Arbor: Janie Paul, Robert Platt, Endi Poskovic, Nancy Thayer and Russell Thayer. The exhibition expresses the importance, impact, spiritual implications and significance of land as it touches and permeates the human experience.  The artists have included universal features of earthly forms that correspond to niches of our internal worlds.  

2014 BBAC: Student Current Works 
A juried show featuring 175 works of art created by adult students. This year's juror is Mary Fortuna. Fortuna is Exhibition Director of the Paint Creek Center for the Arts, Rochester and has been active in the Detroit art community for more than 20 years.

Announcing the 2014 Kresge Eminent Artist: Bill Rauhauser
Iconic Detroit photographer and educator Bill Rauhauser has been named the 2014 Kresge Eminent Artist.

Rauhauser has devoted more than 60 years to "being there" - being present and engaged on the city's streets, inside the studio and inside the classroom. He joins five other artists who have since 2008 received the award and $50,000 prize in recognition of professional achievements, contributions to the cultural community and dedication to Detroit and its residents.
