|
As you're reading this issue of Arts Blast
,
I'll be setting up my own personal calendar for the next several months to make up for what I've been missing.
My new shoulder isn't quite ready for primetime yet, so I've missed Vero Beach Opera's The Barber of Seville
(
packed house
)
, Atlantic Classical Orchestra's first 2020 Masterworks concert
(
reader comment:
Wow - it was just ... extraordinary!
)
, the Martin Artisans Guild's Open Studio Tour preview at the Elliott Museum
(
400+!
)
, and lots more. Sadly, an afternoon of toe tapping at Riverside Theatre for Thoroughly Modern Mille might not happen
(
reader comment: ...
loved every moment. Fun and delightfully energetic!)
but I can't wait for The 39 Steps.
The good news is there's so much more ahead! Art is everywhere this month as is music from classical to jazz to bluegrass to big band. And don't forget Beethoven - a 250th birthday is nothing to sneeze at!
If you haven't discovered On the Calendar at
willimiller.com, go there and you'll be absolutely gobsmacked, as a British friend would say, by the miles and miles of things to do. It's updated several times a week as well as being emailed to subscribers.
Beyond that, updates are added on the Willi Miller's Arts Blast Facebook page.
Scroll way, way down for some of the things going on in the next couple of days.

Churches Open Doors for Artists
|
|
Just as Treasure Coast churches have become go-to venues for music performances of all kinds through the years, they're now opening new doors for visual artists as well.
Several years ago, The Galleries at First Pres — First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach — opened with an installation of works by local artists. Jacob Craig, director of the music and arts programs at the church, called in artist Peter Coe and his jam-maker supreme and artist wife, Carole, to make it happen, with art on display in several locations on the church campus.
The first quarterly exhibition for 2020 opens with a reception Jan. 26, 4-6 p.m. Artists for this cycle are Linda Relis, Mags Hobbs, and Richard Fisher. Galleries at First Pres - 520 Royal Palm Blvd, Vero Beach.
|
In coming weeks in Arts Blast, read about something new at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Shotsi LaJoie at Community Church, Art at the Emerson, and more.

|
The art is hung for the Jan. 26 opening reception at The Galleries at First Pres but that's only one piece of a busy day at First Presbyterian Church in Vero Beach.
|
At 6 p.m., following the artists' reception, the Gainesville Brass quintet will offer a concert of music from baroque to pop and jazz in the sanctuary. A donation of $10 is suggested.
To add to the bounty that same weekend, the final public performances of ChamberFest 2020 are scheduled for the sanctuary Jan. 25 and 26 at 4 p.m. The Sunday performance "
will include a joint performance with Vero Beach High School Orchestral students and the Festival Artists. The concert will end with a community sight-reading party, where audience members who play string or wind instruments can bring their instrument to join in with the Festival Artists and students on a large ensemble piece." For the Chamberfest events, a $10 donation is suggested to benefit the Vero Beach High School Orchestral program.

This caught my attention on Facebook and ukulele player Maggie Monk was kind enough to fill me in.
From Maggie:
"Are you a ukulele player who has gotten past the beginner stage and are looking to share the joy of a ukulele community? Want to practice with others and learn new songs together? Interested in performing locally? If so, come and play with us."
The as yet unnamed intermediate group is "friendly and low key" with shared ambitions to learn, improve and "share our skills while having fun in the process."
The goal is to meet on first and third Tuesdays at 6 p.m., with daytime practices also being considered.
Monk pointed out that this is a new group for experienced players who want more group playing time and performing. Check in on the
Facebook page for more details and contact information or email Monk at canvascruiser@gmail.com.

Show Us Your Flowers, Mother Earth
|
Dotty Greene, an Arts Blast informant on all things gardening in St. Lucie County, has checked in with information about a special show at
Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens Jan. 18 and 19,
the District X Judges Council (Boca to Sebastian) National Garden Clubs flower show.
Greene explained:
"
National Garden Clubs hold flower shows to very specific standards. Judges are well trained and interested in education of exhibitors and the viewing public. This show is extra interesting because the floral designs will all be done by judges or student judges." Horticultural entries will be submitted by judges and other members and "the actual judging will be done by judges from outside our district."
They'll be celebrating Florida's Arbor Day with Mother Earth, a show that has
horticulture exhibits focusing on "Fertile Flora" and design entries that highlight "Mother Nature, Birth and Rebirth."
Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens, 2410 SE Westmoreland Blvd., Port St. Lucie, FL 34952 Admission to Mother Earth is free. Please pay regular admission for touring the gardens. Greene is a member of the Garden Club of Fort Pierce.

Port St. Lucie actor/stand-up comic/animal shelter volunteer John Lomba gives his age as "over 21" and leaves us to do the math as he describes his very busy thirty years on the Treasure Coast.
Somehow, he's managed 25 years of volunteering at both Pineapple Playhouse in Fort Pierce and the Barn Theatre in Stuart. At Pineapple, he's performed, produced, been on the board — including a stint as president — worked in the box office, backstage, the snack bar, and raffle sales. At the Barn, He's been house manager, usher, snack bar and parking lot attendant, and raffle seller. And he still has time to "attend local shows at the many theaters on the Treasure Coast."
His love of theater began early. "
When I was 8 years old my sister took me to see
Peter Pan
. When I was 13 my brother took me to see
My Fair Lady
and that's when I fell in love with live theater." His first role, in 1982, was the father in Heidi. Next he grew a beard and learned how to smoke a pipe to play Dr. Seward in Dracula.

Artists, the ELC Wants You
|
A new opportunity for artists has opened up at the Environmental Learning Center in Wabasso. An environmental educator at ELC (and neighbor), Heather Kramer, explained some thoughts behind this new initiative, the ELC Artist Series.
B
ecause art has an immeasurable way of connecting people to nature, the series is "
the perfect companion to our focus on education," Kramer said. "It also helps us to connect more with the community; bringing in a diverse array of perspectives and styles, to aptly speak for themselves through artistic expression."
Temporary displays will be featured in the Tidal Gallery and Lagoon/Wetland rooms, with locations of permanent displays made determined by the artist proposals received. Get more details

From the Washington Post:

Jan. 14, 2020
While children and their parents have loved the bedtime story for decades, Anne Carroll Moore “hated” it. Moore not only ran the children’s section at the library for 35 years, she actually invented it. And her influence on the entire industry was so widely felt that, even though she technically retired from the library in 1941, her opinion still kept the book off the shelves for decades.
