Nov. 8 - Nov. 14
Ugh! The days are getting darker…Hooray! Two huge “Festival of Lights” bashes are set for this weekend. Flushing Town Hall will host Diwali Festival: Kathak, Bhangra & Beyond on Saturday. Then, Queens Museum will present Diwali Celebration on Sunday. Both events promise to fill their venues with dancing, music, chanting, colorful saris, and many, many candles.
Three related art shows will come to life during one coordinated, 11-hour effort on Saturday. Queens International 2018: Volumes will open at the Queens Library branches in Flushing, Jamaica (aka Central), and Corona’s LeFrak City. The fun will run from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. with free shuttle bus service between the sites and a post-launch reception in Jackson Heights.
The days are getting shorter, but the weeks are getting fuller in the borough. This week features unique Veterans Day events, a few Diwali celebrations, Frida Kahlo, Korean dance, a podcast festival, Superman, Satchmo, Nepalese cuisine, and GingerBread Lane’s triumphant return. Joe DiStefano is the Queens Tourism Council's official foodie. In this blog post , Joey D heads to Juanita’s , a Peruvian restaurant on Northern Boulevard. He finds yummy sandwiches—including pollo a la brasa and butifarra, a home-made roast ham. But he falls head over heals for the chicharrón con camote, a crisp, succulent pork shoulder with sweet potato and salsa criolla.
Back by popular demand, it's the  Thursday Night Jazz Series . The Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning will present live concerts on the second Thursday of every month through June 2019. Sasha Berliner, a musician, composer, producer, and band leader from San Francisco, will perform on the stage in the community gallery on Nov. 8.
Commemorate Veterans Day with tales by those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The Lewis Latimer House Museum will host a  Voices From War Event  on Saturday. Voices From War is a nonprofit that offers writing workshops to veterans and their families. Listen to original works by Voices From War participants on a variety of topics related to armed conflict.

Some ran. Some watched. Some helped out. Before the NYC Marathon last Sunday, Ginia Guzman reported to her Mile 14 volunteer spot in Long Island City at 7 am. She then spent the next few hours cheering, giving out water, and even smiling for this camera .
