From the Indian River Symphonic Association:
THIS FRIDAY’S CONCERT BY THE SIBERIAN STATE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
IS CANCELED
We sincerely regret to inform you that due to unforeseen circumstances, the Siberian State Orchestra concert for this Friday, January 24
th
, has been canceled. To their great disappointment, and ours, the orchestra was unable to secure visas in time for their musicians and staff to travel to the USA despite the fact that they had applied over six months ago.
Within the next two weeks, all single ticket holders for this concert will receive a complete refund, and all of our loyal subscribers will receive a pro-rated refund of their season ticket.
Please accept our sincerest apologies for this unfortunate circumstance and any inconvenience it has caused you.
Sincerely,
Stephen Leary
President of the Board of Directors

As you're reading this issue of Arts Blast
,
you might be thinking you've already done everything there is to do (LOL - not a chance) but the Atlantic Classical Orchestra is one step ahead of you — and me! I had the Chamber Music Series on the menu for this week and went to the ACO website to confirm dates and times and came smack up against something I'd never heard of! How about a Behind the Music Brunch?
Half of the Christina Apelgren/Paul Tardif duo took time between concerts this weekend to tell me about it. Scroll down for the story.

The new
blog on the ACO website has some fascinating reading. Did you ever wonder how big Rachmaninoff's hands were? No? Really? Well, how about a deaf Beethoven's ability to compose? Maestro David Amado knows all and tells all. Don't miss his pre-concert talks with the audience and the
ACO Facebook page.
The Masterworks II concerts, Old, New, Borrowed, and Blue, begin Feb. 18 at Community Church of Vero Beach.

This is a perfect example of not needing to reinvent the wheel. I had planned to write a feature on new Arts Blast sponsor artist
Barbara Krupp, who's opening her Vero Beach studio to the public this week, Jan. 21-24. Krupp has had quite a career. Fifty-three of her paintings were purchased by the University of Tampa's Graduate and Health Studies Building in 2018 and her solo and group exhibitions have been in galleries and museums from coast to coast.
Back to the wheel story. It turns out that my old friend and writing colleague, Vero Beach resident Ann Taylor, has written a terrific story about Krupp for the January 2020 issue of Vero Beach Magazine. I couldn't do a better job than Ann, so I'm recommending finding an issue on newsstands, at the library, or
click on this link to read Ann's story and see the great photos by Jared Blais. Thanks, Ann!
Krupp is one of the artists participating in
A Celebration of Art, the three-day show at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Vero Beach this weekend.

James Judd with the Symphonia
|
We first met when I worked at WTMI in Miami and he was music director of the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra. (A little trivia: It was sometimes known as POOF, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Florida.) Later, he was my guest on Arts Spotlight several times, talking about Beethoven on the Beach. He's back with Beethoven for this concert.
|
Judd travels the world in his work but still has his base in Fort Lauderdale, where he lives with his wife, Valerie, a musician with the Atlantic Classical Orchestra. In addition to many guest conductor gigs, Judd is music director of the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra in South Korea and the Slovak Philharmonic.
On February 9, he will take the rostrum to conduct the Symphonia, a chamber orchestra in Boca Raton, in one of its Marleen Forkas Connoisseur Concert Series, Celebrating Women in Music. Judd said he has conducted the Symphonia in the past "
because the orchestra has many fine musicians and friends (and my wife!) dating back to the FPO. Above all, the leading light of the Symphonia is the wonderful trumpet player Jeff Kaye, a dear friend who deserves everyone's support for his tireless work as musician and organiser."
|
The program lists two works by Florida composer EllenTaaffe Zwilich, including a world premiere, Fanfare for Fran.
Also on the program are two Beethoven works to celebrate his 250th birthday. "
I think it wonderful to hear the freshness and relevance of Beethoven alongside music of a great living composer. However often we play or listen to Beethoven it must seem like the first time."
Retirement isn't a word in Judd's vocabulary. He said, "
Conductors don’t retire but continue as long as at least one arm can follow instructions from the head!" His travel plans for the next year? Slovakia, Spain, Poland, Turkey, Holland, Switzerland, Korea, China, Australia, Macau
.
|
Symphonia concerts in this series are at Roberts Theater at Saint Andrew’s School, 3900 Jog Road, Boca Raton, All performances include a Pre-Concert Conversation with the conductor at 2 p.m.
FEB. 7 | 11:30 a.m.
Conductor James Judd will speak about the February 9 concert, featuring the enchanting work of Zwilich and Beethoven. The Symphonia will preview the pieces that will be performed, with soloists Elissa Lee Koljonen (violin) and Yumi Kendall (cello).
FEB. 8 | 10:30 a.m.
At today's event, children will create and learn to write basic music rhythms, learn about the composers Zwilich and Beethoven, and meet conductor James Judd and the soloists Elissa Lee Koljonen and Yumi Kendall.
FEB. 9 | 03:00 p.m.
James Judd joins the orchestra to conduct works by Zwilich and to celebrate Beethoven's 250th birthday, featuring soloists Elissa Lee Koljonen (violin) and Yumi Kendall (cello).

Port St. Lucie artist Linda Relis has her art-teacher mother to thank for her introduction to painting when she was a hyperactive six year old. "
I'm sure my mother was hoping to find something that would keep me seated for a long period of time and it worked! I fell in love with oil painting." She says she isn't sure if it was the smell of the turpentine or the feel of the paint.
|
And it was oils that stuck with her, despite on and off relationships with acrylics and pen and ink. "
Oil paints are a very forgiving medium and sometimes I need a lot of forgiving. I love working wet on wet and blending a lot. Oils are the perfect medium for that."
|
Relis said her career path took "a large turn after a chance meeting with renowned wildlife artist Robert Bateman." Her work was accepted into an Audubon exhibition and then her artistic compass heading, at least for the short haul, was decided. "
I lived by my brush alone, painting white ducks for an interior designer who had a customer who just happened to love white ducks. ... I enjoyed painting anything with fur, fins, or feathers, but Florida had an abundance of birds that were either endangered, threatened or a species of special concern." Relis specialized in birds for years but has branched out to include pet portraits and other subjects, although birds are still her favorite.
|
When she moved to Port St.Lucie in 1991, Relis began teaching. By the time she retired from teaching last year, she had literally painted herself into a corner several times as her she outgrew her studio space. "I finally have my studio back, where I can paint as large as I want to my heart's content."
|
Relis founded the St. Lucie Professional Arts League in 1995.
Since then, she has been appointed to the St. Lucie County Cultural Affairs Board and the Port St. Lucie Public Art Advisory board for Art in Public Places.
Relis is one of three artists featured in the First Quarter 2020 exhibition at The Galleries at First Pres. Joining her are Mags Hobbs and Richard Fishher. First Presbyterian Church is at 520 Royal Palm Blvd, Vero Beach.

The coming Carnevale di mARTin has been close to a year in the making, involving local artists who have been supplying a very Venetian atmosphere to the project, according to Nancy Turrell, executive director of the Arts Council of Martin County. Blank canvases in the form of masks were donated by Stuart Art Supply, whose owner, Neil Capozzi, is on the event committee. Capozzi is also chairman of the Martin Arts Foundation.
|
Turrell said,
"
Since summer 2019, artists from our region have been very generous sharing their time and creativity embellishing Venetian masks that were donated by Stuart Art Supply. A preview and kick off party was held in September with headliner, Lorrianna Colozzo featured in a short performance at the Court House Cultural Center. Many masks debuted during that evening."
This labor of love —
lavoro fatto per passione
— will culminate in the grand finale Feb. 1 at Willoughby Country Club in Stuart.
|
At this writing, tickets are going fast for the festive Gala that will feature a wide range of entertainment during the "strolling" dinner, Turrell said. It will include
"
stilt walkers greeting guests as they exit their vehicles, piano and strings students will be playing in the lobby, with additional entertainment on the patio to include Florida Aerialists, Al & Lindsay Hagar, Michael Robbins singing, Barn Theatre actors, Duck in the Truck puppets, and more." The main performance will be the highlight of the evening, with “Música di Venezia” featuring Terry Barber, Lorrianna Colozzo, Lindsay Garritson, Tina Burr Aplegren, Martin County High School’s OPUS, and ACT Studio Theatre.
Turrell said the proceeds of this benefit evening will support
"
the year-round activities and programs of the Arts Council. Funding will help us plan for a future cultural center for the benefit of our community and provide some additional support to our reserve funds for emergencies."

An ACO Musical Brunch with Christina and Paul
|
The Atlantic Classical Orchestra's first Behind the Music Brunch is Eat, Play, Love. It will be at the Blue Star Brasserie in Vero Beach, Feb. 9 at noon, with ACO musicians Christina Apelgren,
flute, and
Paul Tardif,
piano.
Apelgren said the music menu was planned around a Valentine's Day theme:
"Romantic opera arias like, O, mio babbino caro.
Classical works such as Vocalise.
Standards like My Funny Valentine.
These works are perfect for this type of event," she said. "They are shorter than in a typical classical concert, allowing lots of time in between pieces. This will allow for the audience to have a more cabaret experience, but with some classical music.
"
Apelgren and Tardif are old friends who met throught the Melbourne Chamber Music Society. "
He is a terrific pianist and is comfortable playing many styles," she said. Apelgren has been the principal flute with the ACO since the very beginning, 30 years ago. She is also principal flute with the Brevard Symphony, "and have been with them even longer.
At Christmas time I play for Disney's Candlelight Processional at EPCOT and have done that for the past 12 years."
Reservations are required and seating is limited. For tickets, contact the ACO Box Office at 772.460.0851
The second Behind the Music Brunch will be March 8
