Art at the Library

New Artists-in-Residence

Stop by the library for the month of February and you'll see we have two new Artists-in-Residence: Hannah Lehigh and Jim Mackey.

Hannah Lehigh is an illustrator currently living in Fulton County. Her favorite mediums are watercolor, pen, and pencil. When not creating art for a book, Hannah's work is often influenced by her love of music. Some of her hobbies are sending happy mail, learning languages, and reading free verse poetry.

Jim Mackey is a self-taught, regional artist who uses found art as a commentary of his life and is particularly inspired to focus on that which surrounds his past struggles with mental illness and addiction. He hopes people will be influenced by his work through the emotions they feel and hidden thoughts they may think. Mackey was born in the mountain of Horse Valley, Pennsylvania in 1954. He currently lives and creates in Gettysburg.

Stop by the library, pick up the program and wander and enjoy. Some pieces are also for sale but must stay for the duration of the show. We hope you'll come and enjoy.

Pictured above are some of Jim Mackey's totems and below you can find one of Hannah Lehigh's watercolors.

Upcoming Student Art Show

The Fulton County Library wants to support art in Fulton County. We have a special student show in March. Please help us spread the word. We are looking for art that can be hung from a hook although we may have some space for 3-D art as well. Students can be of any age. We're looking for a few things from each artist as there is space. If you are interested, please reach out to April and she can let you know more details. There will be no judging for this show but if artists want to sell their artwork, we can allow that.

Email April or stop by the library to get a submission form. Please share with other teachers, parents, grandparents, art lovers, homeschool groups, and anyone else who might be interested in participating. Last year's submissions were awesome and we're looking forward to seeing this year's art.

Create at the library

Join Sheila Druist of Wildflower Whispers Studio to create a framed confetti heart like the one pictured here to celebrate Valentine’s Day or any other time you want to share some love. This project is for folks ages 6 and up (younger ones can participate if they have an adult helper).

We’ll be creating from 3pm to around 4pm on Friday, February 10. Participants are asked to reserve their spot by calling the library and paying $5. Sign up as soon as possible to be sure you get a slot. We are only taking 10 participants.

Drawing at the Library

Tuesdays from 10-12

Want to sharpen your drawing skills and have some fun? The Fulton County Library is sponsoring an informal drawing group for those who want to draw portraits from a live model.

Participants bring their own drawing supplies and drawing board or easel. Tables and chairs are available for artists who preferred to work flat. For extra fun there may be the occasional costumed model, or even a still life setup, lite snacks and/or soft background music.

This is just for fun and to challenge yourself to build your drawing skills. Since there is no instruction, this activity is mainly for artists with some experience or someone with an interest in drawing, particularly from a live clothed model. This would also be a great chance to informally share with other artists with similar interests.

Mango Languages

Want to learn a new language or maybe brush up on one you already sort of know? Try Mango Languages. Mango prepares learners for realistic conversations and communication in over 70 world languages. With your library card you can create a username and password and even use the Mango Languages app. If you're not ready for that, use it as a guest to see what languages you might want to try. Ukrainian? Shakespearean English? Cherokee? There are a lot to choose from. For our youngest patrons there's even Little Pim.

Find Mango Languages on our Digital Library page.

Staff Picks

This recently named Caldecott Honor Winner is filled with humor and heart. Since the day he hatched, Owl dreamed of becoming a real knight. He may be smaller and nocturnal, but those weaknesses can also be strengths.

Staff says...

"This book is sweet and the pictures are filled with little details that you might not notice the first time around. I enjoyed it and so did the preschoolers I read it to."
