Black & White Project Space, Southampton, NY presents Icons on Ammunition Boxes™ – a conceptual project by Ukrainian artists Sonia Atlantova and Olexander Klimenko.
Olexander Klimenko and Sonia Atlantova have been painting icons on ammunition boxes since the annexation of Crimea in 2014. By selling their work all over the world, they are raising money for volunteer mobile hospitals in Ukraine that provide urgent medical care to wounded Ukrainian soldiers and civilians.
Icons on Ammunition Boxes™ stand for transformation of military rubbish smelling of death into life-affirming art. As silent witnesses of war the icons become symbols of life overcoming horrors of war. They epitomize how violence and pain can be converted into peace and consolation; they bring hope for peace and justice to the country torn by war and become the important source of financial support to several mobile field hospitals to make such transformation possible.
