Soup Bowl Maker Joan Cortright
|
|
Before you ask: 1. Joan's bowl with the hare under a full moon has so many admirers that it might turn out to be a raffle item.
2. No soup bowls may be purchased before the official Soup Bowl day, Nov. 5. Believe me, I tried.
Joan Cortright is one of the many talented and generous potters at Indian River Clay who have produced more than a thousand pieces of art to be sold at the Empty Bowl - Full Heart benefit for the Samaritan Center in Vero Beach.
|
From Joan Cortright:
When I took a class in ceramics at the local community college, over 30 years ago, I was hooked. Wheel, hand building, sculpture, the anticipation waiting for the kiln to cool down, I still love it. In 1996 I moved to Miami and rented a studio at the Ceramic League of Miami and during my 15 years there served on the Board of Directors, was employed as the school director, and taught many years of classes and summer camp.
|
|
I moved to Vero Beach in 2012 and got a job teaching clay classes at the Vero Beach Museum of Art. That’s where I met Shotsi and joined the Soup Bowls project. I love experimenting with glazes so most of my bowls are one of a kind.
I enjoyed meeting everyone from the local clay community and all the Mad Potters, but every time I met Maris Sparsis we would talk about our dream of a community clay studio (I did miss the Ceramic League). Well, when the opportunity arose a group of us got together for a lunch meeting and made it happen. Indian River Clay is in its second year and in a beautiful new space at 1239 16th Street, Vero Beach.
|
|
IRClay, its members and the clay community really came together with the Samaritan Center, in this difficult time, to make sure we could follow all the health protocols and still have a Soup Bowls event. Board member Beverly Swatt coordinated it all and our studio manager, Ginny Peach Street, has been loading and firing the kilns every night! Whew! I’m serving on the Board of Directors and a liaison to the Education Committee and so very proud to be a part of this organization.
|
The Soup Bowl will be an all-day affair but don't come hungry — soup will not be offered this year. Covid-19 strikes again.
Program Development & Relationship Manager for the Samaritan Center Renee Bireley said, "We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the many restaurants, caterers and country clubs that have, over the years, donated hundreds of gallons of soup to the event. However, in recognition of the hardship to these soup suppliers, we will not be asking for soup donations."
Hours are 9 a.m. -7 p.m. at the Heritage Center on 14th Avenue in downtown Vero Beach.

Vero Beach Museum of Art Kicks Off Film Studies Series
Films will be part of a slightly different Film Studies course as the Museum offers each series as an online, streaming format for students to view at home.
The first series showcases Americana: Stories of American Art and Culture from the Early Twentieth Century and will present films that complement the current Avery to Warhol exhibition highlighting the spirit of American culture between 1850 and 1950. Films will exemplify wonderful writers and painters from this era, including “Last Call,” which chronicles the troubled genius of F. Scott Fitzgerald as he struggled to complete his unfinished novel The Last Tycoon. The framework for “Last Call” is derived from the personal memoir of his assistant and secretary during those last days, when she served as his confidante and sounding board, to create a work that was possibly his most famous and enduring. Classes run October 13 - November 10.
Students may sign up for either the afternoon session at 1:30 p.m. or the evening session at 7 p.m. as part of the five-week film studies offering. Films will be introduced by Film Studies Coordinator, Diane Thelen, but there will be no moderated discussion.
To find out more about fall classes at the Museum or to register visit www.vbmuseum.org or call (772) 231 0707 ext 136. Tuition for the five-week course(s) is $95 per person Non-Member, ($80 for per person Museum Members). Please note: to purchase tickets online, you must first register for the website. Old logins will not work.

A note from Jim van Voorheis:
Notes Wine Bar and Music Room has a new owner, Carey Holmes and Friday night jazz. "Priscilla will be there to host Notes and help keep a clean and safe environment. Our changing the jam session to Friday evenings should help bring in even more support.
"I will be on keys, John Tubby on bass, Max Duhalde on drums, Tommy Pertis on guitar, and we’re expecting a horn player and some jazz singers to add to the fun. Priscilla and the musicians are wearing masks. Singers are bringing their own mikes. Come and enjoy some good music!

A heartbreaking story was in the Philadelphia Inquirer recently. Sad for artists who photograph, paint, or sculpt birds, sad for birdwatchers and for those who love any aspect of nature. A heads-up: The link to the story, excerpted here, will take you to the newspaper's website, where there are photos.
Stephen Maciejewski dropped to a knee on a Center City sidewalk Wednesday morning and gently scooped up a yellow-billed cuckoo that had smashed into a skyscraper and died on its way to Central America or the West Indies.
“This probably happened yesterday,” said Maciejewski, a 71-year-old retired social worker and volunteer for Audubon Pennsylvania. He labeled a plastic bag with the time, date, and location, tucked the slim migrator into it, and continued his rounds.
Maciejewski gets emotional when he speaks about all the birds he finds, but nothing, he says, prepared him for what happened Friday.
“So many birds were falling out of the sky, we didn’t know what was going on," he said, choking up. "It was a really catastrophic event. The last time something like this happened was in 1948.”

On Saturday, October 17 at 6:30 PM, Suntree United Methodist Church at 7400 N. Wickham Road, 32940 will present the silent film Phantom of the Opera as an early Halloween offering in its Suntree Silent Cinema series. Organist Tom Taylor will again provide historically accurate organ accompaniment to the eerie thriller on the church's restored 1924 Hook & Hastings pipe organ, reprising a well-received 2016 performance to The Phantom of the Opera. The film screening will be emceed by the director of traditional music at Suntree United Methodist Church, Dr. Robert E. Lamb, who will also deliver a short introductory lecture on the 95-year old silent film classic. The Phantom will not be alone in his mask, as the audience is asked to abide by church coronavirus protocols and don their own masks prior to entering the sanctuary. The audience seating will be limited and spaced in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines for social distancing. While the event is free of charge, tickets for in-person attendance are required and can be obtained by calling Suntree United Methodist Church at 321-242-2585. Website visitors to SuntreeUMC.org can also reserve tickets in advance by completing the online ticket form, or tune in to watch a live stream of the event.

Cars Are Hot & Cool at at the Elliott
|
Listen to a detailed account of one of the Elliott Museum's most prized possessions, a 1914 Packard model 2-38 seven passenger Phaeton.
|
Thanks to Dr. David MacMillan, the Elliott Museum has added a Model Twenty-Five, five passenger touring vehicle to its car collection. The car’s four-cylinder engine produces 25 horsepower. The car is light gray with black fenders complemented by red coach lines. The headlamps, radiator shell, hubcaps and other appointments are brass. The interior is upholstered in black button tufted leather. This rare car is in excellent restored condition.
The Regal Automobile Company produced cars in Detroit from 1908 until 1918. In 1911 Regal began building sporty “underslung” cars. In an underslung, the axles and springs are suspended above the chassis. This placement provides a much lower ride height and better handling than in conventional cars. While Regal was not the only company to build underslung cars, it and the elegant American Underslung (built in Indianapolis, Indiana) are the best known.
|
Lew's Crew Cruisin' at the Elliott is held every Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m., weather permitting, in the Elliott Museum's parking lot. In addition to a lineup of cool cars, there also is a food truck on site.
Thanks to the True Oldies Channel radio station for promoting the show. There’s a $3 fee to show your car and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the museum. Admission is free for guests, who are asked to remember to follow CDC guidelines pertaining to social distancing and wearing a mask.
|
Both of our museums are in need of volunteers! The House of Refuge needs to fill positions in lawn maintenance, tour guides and admission desk. The Elliott Museum has volunteer positions in the car gallery and Emporium Museum Shoppe, at the admissions desk, and docents also are needed.
If you (or someone you know) is interested, please fill out an application. You can do so by coming into one of the museums, going to the website or contacting Director of Visitor Services Amie Smith via email.

From cellist Mike Block, looking for musicians:
I am writing about a big idea that I wanted to make sure you knew about, and invite you directly to get involved, if interested. I’m also hoping you might be able to spread the word and help us connect with more musicians and citizens in your communities.
It’s called Play For the Vote, and we are organizing musical performances at polling locations across the country on Election Day with the goal of increasing voter turnout by providing a more positive voting experience.
We just went public at www.PlayForTheVote.com, and are now accepting signups from musicians of all backgrounds who are interested in performing!
I know this whole idea is pretty crazy, and I’m obviously in way over my head, but I was hoping you might be willing to help in any of the following ways:
- Sign up to play yourself! :)
-
Encourage other musicians to sign up by sharing this email or our website with colleagues/students that may be receptive: www.PlayForTheVote.com.
-
We also want to reach as many voters and potential voters as possible, so you could let your friends & fans know by posting on social media using the hashtag #PlayForTheVote, and tag us at @PlayForTheVote on Facebook and Instagram and @play_vote on Twitter!
Election Day is shaping up to be pretty stressful for many people, while musicians are struggling to share music in a meaningful way during the pandemic. November 3 is the perfect opportunity for the musicians of this country to join together to spread the unifying power of shared musical experiences on an unprecedented level. I’m asking for musicians to join me in signing up to perform at a nearby polling location so that we can make voting a more positive experience for the whole country!

Both of our museums are in need of volunteers! The House of Refuge needs to fill positions in lawn maintenance, tour guides and admission desk. The Elliott Museum has volunteer positions in the car gallery and Emporium Museum Shoppe, at the admissions desk, and docents also are needed.

Excerpt from The New Yorker:
In a new video series, the members of the orchestra play together for the first time since lockdown began.
Since the pandemic struck these shores, the situation for American classical music, as for the rest of the performing arts, has been one long, deepening agony. Orchestras and opera houses have been almost completely inactive throughout the spring and summer. Some of them have effectively given up the idea of a fall 2020 or a spring 2021 season. How many institutions will be able to return to what they were—or return at all—is an open question. Feelings of frustration and despair are heightened when musicians look across the ocean to Europe, where both outdoor and indoor performances have resumed.

Here's a suggestion for uploading information to calendars that allow you to input your own events.
In the body of the listing, sometimes called Description, make sure to include all dates in each upload. For example: Performances are on March 12-31; or the exhibit is open March 12, 14, 15, and 17. That information should be in all dates you post individually.
If you are a member of the Cultural Council of Indian River County, you need this information:
The deadline is MONDAY - 10 days prior to the Wednesday publication.
