It's been a busy start to the summer here at RTPI! With the recent opening of two new exhibitions, Art that Matters to the Planet: Interconnectivity and Joseph Grice: Taking Flight, the building is filled with thoughtful and exciting art.

Inspired by the emerging science and insights of Suzanne Simard (Finding the Mother Tree) and Peter Wohlleben (The Hidden Life of Trees), Art that Matters to the Planet 2023: Interconnectivity, explores the underground network of tree roots, and how communication and nutrient sharing helps trees to thrive.

Joseph Grice: Taking Flight features works that Grice created based on his research of the Peterson collection, as well as his insights into Peterson’s work and career made during his time as Artist-in-Residence at RTPI in 2022.

We are excited about the response we are getting to both exhibitions, but instead of us telling you about them, we thought we'd let a recent visitor share his thoughts.

"I am a retired environmental scientist from Westchester County, N.Y. I have always wanted to visit your museum and this year I made the time to do so. The visit exceeded my expectations.

"I was stunned by the mastery of both floors. I have studied the books by Suzanne Simard and Peter Wohlleben and your display captured the imagery of the intersection of science, nature, art and (for me) spirituality.

"The second floor (exhibition by artist, Joseph Grice) also impressed me with its dynamism. I felt like I was being eyed on as a potential meal for the osprey and that I was with the owl that was homing in on its prey. Finally, your interspersion of Peterson's bird portraits was a creative linkage to the "patron saint" of your museum. Thank you for blessing my day with inspiration." Thank you, Jack Kozuchowski!

If you haven't visited recently, we hope to see you soon.

Art After 5 featuring Kody & Herren

Join us on July 28 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm for Art After 5 featuring Kody & Herren.

Kody & Herren are multi-instrumentalists, performing on guitar, violin, harmonica, mandolin, and more. Nick and Lydia’s original material is inspired heavily by roots music and their duets provide a strong chemistry on stage. Vocal harmonies and the overall dynamics of a song are very important to them, and they aim to entertain an audience.

Included with each Art After 5 ticket is full access to the museum, along with a drink from the RTPI bar, charcuterie, and two hours of live music.

Painting Birds with Watercolor, with Joseph Grice

This workshop is back by popular demand and will be held over three consecutive Sundays, July 23rd, July 30th, and August 6th, from 1:00-2:30 pm each day.

Joseph Grice is a wildlife illustrator. He earned his BFA from SUNY Fredonia, and has taught at Infinity Visual & Performing Arts in Jamestown, and at Holt School of Fine Art in Charlotte, NC. He began painting watercolor birds as his primary subject matter in 2016, a tribute to his childhood where he grew up watching birds and spending time studying Roger Tory Peterson Field Guide books. His exhibition, Joseph Grice: Taking Flight is currently on view at RTPI.

The workshop is great for artists of all levels and you will learn how to paint realistic and lifelike birds. Space is limited to the first 10 students.
