The crew of the Artemis II mission — commander Reid Weisman, pilot Victor Glover, and astronauts Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen — put forth an extraordinary example of what the modern workforce needs: Authentic leadership, grounded in empathy and collaboration and driven by curiosity and love.
In this BBC interview conducted a week after the landing, they shared thoughts that illustrate the value of how they approached their work. Hansen noted that even though they felt small seeing Earth from so far away, they are "powerful together." Wiseman added to the emphasis on teamwork and mutual support, noting that "every single person on that crew lifted each other up the entire time." Koch advised future astronauts to "remember you are part of a team," and Glover encouraged them to "ask more questions." A second BBC article emphasizes that the crew not only cemented their own bond through the experience and the interdependence of their work, but that they helped people on Earth reach across divisions and see how they are, and can be, united.
Back on the ground in academic coaching offices at institutions of higher education, coaches are part of building the human beings we need for collaborative, compassionate success in the workplace. Coaching can help to move students from individual contributor — in status and mindset — to collaborative impact leader in class, work, and community. Coaching encourages initiative with connecting with others, careful unpacking of assumptions, perspective shifts, and openness to continued learning (which supports cooperative problem solving and the welcoming of the fact that no individual has all the information and skills on their own).
Coaches, in a time of job scarcity when students are often feeling intense stress about their work prospects, bring the characteristics and values of the crew of the Artemis II into the conversation. Encourage students to think about how to build habits in their day-to-day learning lives — through their groupwork, participation, and willingness to connect with others to push through confusion and learning struggles — that will help them become employees who connect with others, contribute to building a team that is larger than the sum of its parts, and lead with love.
