"Washington County Roots" to feature
Howard 'Blackie' Bowen
Fri, November 1, 2019 * 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Fans of the popular television show, Who Do you Think You Are” should not miss the second annual “Washington County Roots.” This year’s event will feature Howard “Blackie” Bowen, a prominent Hagerstownian and generous local benefactor. Washington County Historical Society’s kinship genealogy researchers have been hot on the trail of Blackie’s ancestors. Join them on Friday, November 1, 2019 from 6-8pm in the Miller House parlor as they reveal in a live presentation what they have found.
Blackie and his family will be treated to a journey back in time through his family tree, uncovering some of his ancestors’ most interesting stories and secrets, all the way back to the 1600s. WCHS researchers may even have dug up some family artifacts! The presentation will include a cash bar and light refreshments.
Tickets are $15 ($10 for members) and are available for purchase online or by visiting the offices of the Washington County Historical Society.

Dystopia/Hope: An eclectic collection of photographic images of inspiration and despair

Our troubled times can seem bleak and foreboding but somehow we manage to find hope amidst the wreckage. Dystopia/Hope will focus on many facets of life that show encouragement or despair, a never-ending struggle.
John Krowka is a self-taught photographer who has found comfort and satisfaction in taking photos for over 50 years. His photo "Playtime" is on display on the Cultural Trail in Hagerstown and his photo "Trump Rally" won the Juror's prize at the Cumberland Valley Photo Competition. His photo "Barred Owl" won first prize in the Boonsboro Greenfest and "Lockhouse #51" will be included in the 2020 C&O Canal Trust Calendar.
Krowka has resided in Boonsboro for the last 18 years and will always be a NYC native. He is actively involved in community organizations, operates Kensho Farms in Boonsboro, and is a retired immunologist / microbiologist who spent ~ 20 years doing AIDS research in the San Francisco Bay area.

Jennie Avila will perform selections from her Civil War true story songs. Experience the Civil War musically, through the eyes of Antietam area residents. Everyday people found themselves in the extraordinary circumstances of the Civil War: blue and gray, black and white, men and women, young and old... and of course a horse.

Jennie Avila worked with the Boonsboro Museum of History, various WC Historical Societies, The Western Maryland Room in Hagerstown's Library, and local descendants of Civil War era. Her research spanned eight years, as more and more tales came out of the woodwork. These songs are based on true stories that Jennie could get her hands on and her heart around. Hear the eerie stories behind the stories, as well as Stephen Wright's handmade ceramic drums.
A veteran singer-songwriter, Jennie Avila has opened for many beloved performers such as; comedian Robin Williams, the Legendary Pete Seeger, Janis Ian and Richie Havens. She currently performs solo and with her Husband, Stephen Wright. She has composed 10 albums of original music. The most recent CD, entitled "Love & Lore of The Civil War", was inspired by true stories from the Antietam Battlefield area. It was preceded by "Civil War Stories in Song", an EP sponsored by the WC Convention and Visitors Bureau. Jennie Avila was honored to perform her original Civil War songs with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra as part of their 2013 and 2017 Salutes to Independence.

Washington County's Kennedy Farmhouse has a long history: first hosting John Brown as he planned the raid on Harpers Ferry, then as a major stop for some of the biggest African American musicians in American history. Join author Ed Maliskas for more information on the little farmhouse with a big history and his band as they bring to life some of the hits played at the Kennedy Farm.

Return to Normalcy: Post World War II Life in Washington County - Exclusive Film Screening at the Maryland Theatre

The Washington County Playhouse Dinner Theater presents
The Wizard of Oz
on its Mainstage beginning November 15th and running through December 22nd. Shows are held on Friday and Saturday evenings and select Sundays. The Broadway show, preceded by a buffet meal, is appropriate for ages five and older.
Follow the yellow brick road again! Young Dorothy lives on a farm in Kansas where a large tornado picks her house, and her dog up and deposits them in the land of Oz. Things in Oz are strange and beautiful, but Dorothy just wants to get back home. She’s helped by the Good Witch of the North, but she’s also in trouble with the Wicked Witch of the West, who seeks revenge for the death of the Wicked Witch of the East, for which she blames Dorothy. While searching her way home she meets a Scarecrow who needs a brain, a Tin Man who needs a heart, and a cowardly lion who needs courage.

Potomac Playmakers - "The Porch"

The Potomac Playmakers proudly announce the second show of the 2019-2020 Season, Jack Neary’s comedy, “The Porch!” “The Porch” takes place over Labor Day weekend in 2006. Three friends, all women in their late fifties or early sixties, sit on a front porch and comment—sometimes graphically—on anything and everything in their purview. Over the course of the play, their husbands are introduced into the action. Many topics are addressed, but under the camaraderie is a secret that won’t be revealed until the penultimate scene, which cements the bond established among these lifetime friends. Laughs abound from the very first scene and rarely let up. But then, since it's a comedy about real people, life steps in, plots twist, and lives change. It's a play about the challenge of enduring friendships, and has been compared to “The Golden Girls” and “Steel Magnolias.”
“The Porch,” directed by Cathy James with Rachael Thompson, stars Greg Berezuk, Wanda Dittmann, Tom Doty, Kimberly Jones, and Paulette Lee. “The Porch” is sponsored in part by a grant from the Washington County Arts Council and will run November 15-17 and November 22-24, 2019 at Zion Lutheran Church, located at 31 W. Potomac Street, Williamsport, Maryland 21795. Showtime for the Friday and Saturday performances will be at 8:00 pm, while the Sunday matinee performances will start at 3:00 pm. Maryland Symphony Orchestra Will Present “The American Symphony”
at New Maryland Theatre Performing Arts Center
The 38th season of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra continues on Saturday, November 16 at 7:30 p.m. with a musical journey that celebrates America. “The American Symphony” features the music of Antonín Dvořák, Florence Price, and Kimo Williams. During this one night only performance, Elizabeth Schulze and the Maryland Symphony Orchestra will take the stage at the newly renovated Maryland Theatre Performing Arts Center for a truly memorable concert experience.
When Antonín Dvořák came to the U.S. at the end of the 19th century, he was an immigrant thrown into a new world and new sounds. Out of that experience, he wrote a symphony for America: Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, subtitled "From the New World." It has become one of the world's most beloved orchestral works. It also produced a melody that is both a hymn and an anthem to what American music can be.
Also featured on the program, the Symphony in E minor is the first symphony written by the American composer Florence Price. The work was completed in 1932 and was first performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the conductor Frederick Stock in June 1933. The piece was Price's first full-scale orchestral composition and was the first symphony by an African American woman to be performed by a major American orchestra.
During this performance, the MSO will also premiere a new work by Kimo Williams, a retired US Army Vietnam veteran and local composer from Shepherdstown, WV. “Fanfare of a Flower,” was commissioned by the Maryland Symphony in honor of Music Director Elizabeth Schulze’s 20th anniversary with the orchestra. An award winning and nationally recognized composer, Mr. Williams’ compositions have been performed by the symphonies of Detroit, Atlanta, Savannah, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, Alabama and Dallas, among many others.
The 2019/2020 concert season is presented through the generous support of Antietam Broadband. The MSO is also supported by an operating grant from the Maryland State Arts Council, an agency dedicated to cultivating a vibrant cultural community where the arts thrive.
