2019 Washington Goes Purple
Call for Artists

Washington Goes Purple is an awareness movement to educate our community and youth about the dangers of prescription painkillers and other drugs. By focusing on education, prevention and mental health we know we can heal through this opioid crisis, which has become the deadliest health crisis in US history. We are thankful for this partnership with the Washington County Arts Council. Art can show things that people are afraid of expressing and make connections that words cannot. We believe that by using art to build awareness we can inspire the community to continue coming together for a common goal - to prevent addiction.

The Athenaeum Invitational 2019
Board out of our minds!
Call for Artists

The Athenaeum Invitational celebrates the visual arts of Virginia, Maryland, the District of Columbia and West Virginia in the Athenaeum Gallery in Alexandria, VA. It is a theme-based event featuring the works of both specially-invited artists who have exhibited in the Athenaeum Gallery in the past, as well as works selected through a call for submissions open to anyone living or working in VA/DC/MD/WV. A $1500 prize for the best work will be awarded to an invited artist, a $1000 prize will be awarded to an artist from the open call, a $500 prize will be awarded based on core concept and game design, and a viewers' choice award of $500 will be determined by popular vote.

Board: out of our minds!
Artists and 'artists of the mind' from DC, MD, VA and WV are invited to explore the broad concept of board games. Entries might be based on a real or imagined game, an environment where games are played, or people's relationships to board games. Entries that demonstrate creative brilliance through the core concept and game design are encouraged as well as purely aesthetic works.
Consider games as a means of dealing with social issues or escaping reality; games as a reflection of a labyrinth or as path to justice. A game might be way to explore the world or experience other cultures. Entries might be inspired by favorite childhood games or today’s issues such as climate change or political rancor.
Submission Deadline: August 1, 2019
Exhibition: September 12 — November 10, 2019

2019 Pictures at an Exhibition
Juried Fine Art Show and Sale

The annual Pictures at an Exhibition Fine Art Show is a juried presentation representing masterful artistry. The chosen art-works are based on originality, artistic conception and quality of the individual’s skill of the medium. The event is publicized by Local Media, Social Media and Print Advertising.
Jurors involved in the art community will be chosen to select artwork to be included in the 2019 Pictures at an Exhibition. Because art appreciation is highly subjective, we make every effort to select qualified jurors from a variety of art professionals, working artists and gallery owners. All jurors are selected to recognize quality works based on the artists’ understanding of the principles and elements of design and the ability to use their chosen media.
Barb Kiwak, Painter, Sculptor and Illustrator, will judge the 2019 PAE Exhibit. Maryland painter, illustrator and sculptor Barbara Kiwak is known for her landscapes and marine scenes. Ms. Kiwak graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1988 with a BFA in Visual Communications.

World Art Drop Day

Every first Tuesday of September is World Art Drop Day, a global art campaign founded by freelance illustrator, Jake Parker, that aims to connect the whole planet with art.
The inspiration came from his own experience in cross-country art drop where he left sketches around the United States. He said that he received tons of positive responses from the finders and he wants us to experience that kind of happiness, too!

To give you an idea, here’s how the concept of art drop works:
  • Draw a picture and hide it somewhere.
  • Take a photo of either the art, the hiding spot, or a combination of both.
  • Post the image, the city you dropped it in, and a hint on any social media platform of your choice. Use the hashtag #artdropday to make your experience visible to the public.
  • Then move on, hoping someone finds it or hang around and meet your new friend.
