July 2016 Exhibits

August 2016 Exhibits 

The Washington County Arts Council presents "Luis Vega: Expressing Culture" and "Linda Barnhart: Encountering Creation"
as the August 2016 featured exhibits which continue from July 29, 2016 through August 23, 2016.
An opening reception will be held at the Gallery on Friday, July 29, 2016 from 5pm to 7pm. 
Annual Community Art Show: The Best Local Art of 2016  

The Washington County Arts Council, Inc. invites local artists working in any medium to submit their best new works for WCAC's "Annual Community Art Show: The Best Local Art of 2016." The juried community art exhibit will run from December 2, 2016 through January 3, 2017 with an opening reception on Friday, December 2 from 5pm to 7pm.

Artists are encouraged to submit up to three entries. No works previously shown at WCAC will be considered. Images must be submitted in a .jpg format and files should be labeled: "Last Name_First Name_Title of Work."

Please email images of the works to be considered with the completed entry form to: gallerymanager@washingtoncountyarts.com
Include full name, address, telephone and email address.

   
The 7th Annual
Washington County
Art Educators Exhibit

The Washington County Arts Council (WCAC) invites all art educators in Washington County's public and private schools to enter work for the February exhibit. This is an invitational exhibition and all work will be accepted. Each educator is allowed to submit three works that have been completed within the last two years and all work must be for sale.

Artwork may be dropped off Friday, January 27, 2017 through Wednesday, February 1, 2017 during WCAC business hours. The Exhibit will run from February 3, 2017 through February 28, 2017. An opening reception will be held on Friday, February 3, 2017 from 5pm to 7pm.
Potomac Playmakers 2016 Annual Membership Meeting

The Potomac Playmakers' Annual Membership meeting will be held on July 24, 2016 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the Washington County Arts Council, 34 S Potomac Street in the heart of the A & E District, across from the Maryland Theatre.
 
Annual dues of $20 will be collected at the meeting, which will entitle members in good standing to vote on the pending business on the agenda, which includes the election of some of the Board members and Officers! This will also be a time to celebrate the continued success of The Potomac Playmakers, and will serve as the launch of the 90th Anniversary Season!

Visit Hagerstown-Washington County CVB Announces
2nd Annual #HappyinHagerstown photo contest

 
The Visit Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) has announced its second annual #HappyInHagerstown photo contest. Visitors and local residents are invited to submit any number of photos, as long as they are taken in Washington County, Maryland.
"If you're happy in Hagerstown, or any other part of Washington County, we want you to show us," said Dan Spedden, President of the Visit Hagerstown-Washington County CVB. "Pull out those cameras and cellphones and capture the best things about our county! You could see your very own photo in future promotional materials for Visit Hagerstown and even win a cash prize!"
The 2016 #HappyInHagerstown photo contest begins Friday, July 15 and runs through Sunday, August 7. Photographs can be submitted on the Visit Hagerstown website at http://bit.ly/HappyInHtown or by going to the Visit Hagerstown website at www.visithagerstown.com and following the link to the contest. Finalists will be chosen and an official winner will be announced August 10. The top winner will receive a cash prize of $500, the second place winner will receive $250 and the third place winner will receive $100.
There is no limit to the number of photos anyone can enter in the contest. By submitting an image, you agree you are the actual photographer. The CVB reserves the right to use any photos entered in the contest for promotional purposes such as print materials, on the Visit Hagerstown website, and on social platforms.
A Visit Hagerstown selection committee will select and then announce the top three contest winners on August 10, 2016. The quality of the photo, content, and other factors will be taken into consideration by the selection committee. Be sure to like us on Facebook to see if your photo has been chosen as a winner!

The Dixie Swim Club is The Washington County Playhouse Dinner Theater and Children's Theater's fourth Mainstage show of its 32nd Season.

From the writers of TV's THE GOLDEN GIRLS comes the story of five Southern women, whose friendships began many years ago on their college swim team. They set aside a long weekend every August to recharge those relationships. Free from husbands, kids, and jobs, they meet at the same beach cottage on North Carolina's Outer Banks to catch up, laugh, and meddle in each other's lives. If you like STEEL MAGNOLIAS, you'll LOVE The Dixie Swim Club!

Starring Diana Abrecht, Alllison Banzhoff, Joan Crooks, Cookie Driscoll and Denise O'Brien, the heartfelt and hilarious comedy is directed by Scott Ruble.

Performances begin on July 22 and continue on Friday and Saturday evenings through August 20. There is one Sunday Matinee on July 24.

Buffet Dinner and show tickets cost $42.00 for adults. There is a cash bar available.

The Great Hagerstown Fair

Washington County Historical Society Curator Anna Cueto will be comparing the Hagerstown Fair with other great exhibitions of the 18t...h and 19th centuries. Come explore why the World's Fairs were so popular around the turn of the century.
 
Tickets are $5, but free for members of the Washington County Historical Society. Special ticket price includes museum admission on the day of the lecture. Space is limited, so please call 301-797-8782 or email info@washcomdhistoricalsociety.org to reserve your seats.

A current exhibit, "The Great Fair," takes visitors back in time when the fair was a staple of community life. A display of documents, photographs and artifacts of this great local tradition continues throughout the summer months until August 31 and will be open the day of the lecture.
 
The exhibit will also be open during regular hours of the Miller House Museum, Wednesday through Saturday, from 1 to 4:00 p.m. It is recommended that visitors call 301-797-8782 to arrange tours. Large group tours can be arranged by appointment. Admission prices are: $8.00 for adults, $5.00 for seniors and students.

These classes are incredibly popular and will fill up quickly.

Artists wishing to compete in the Best of the West: Three Dimensional Art of Western Maryland may now enter their pieces through the CaFÉ online entry system at callforentry.org. There is a $20 entry fee for the first entry and a $10 fee for each additional entry. The deadline for entries is July 30, 2016. The exhibition will open in Cumberland on October 14, 2016.

Hagerstown Community College's Robinwood Players will perform William Shakespeare's classic tragedy, "Macbeth," Thursday, August 4, through Sunday, August 7, in the Kepler Theater on HCC's main campus.
 
Show times are 8 p.m. on August 4, 5, and 6. A special matinee performance will be held on August 7 at 2:30 p.m. This show is rated PG-13 due to some violence.
 
Ticket costs range from $10 to $20, and can be reserved by visiting www.hagerstowncc.edu/student-activities/productions. HCC students, staff, and faculty can attend for free.

Are you an aspiring novelist eager to write your first novel? Or a writer looking to forge lasting connections with other writers and publishing professionals? Join us for the Mid-Atlantic Fiction Writers Institute at Hagerstown Community College on August 12-13, 2016. We know that it takes more than words on a page to craft a story and build a successful writing career. The annual MAFWI summer conference offers workshops and breakout sessions by bestselling authors, college faculty, and experienced industry professionals. From story fundamentals like plot and point of view to seasoned advice on how to market your work, there is something for writers of every genre at MAFWI. This year's keynote speaker is Brad Parks. Brad is the only author to have won the Shamus, Nero and Lefty Awards, three of crime fiction's most prestigious prizes. His next novel, Say Nothing, releases from Dutton in March 2017. A Dartmouth College graduate, Brad is a former journalist with The Washington Post and The (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger. Now a full-time novelist, he lives in Tidewater, Virginia with his wife and two school-aged children.
