The Washington County Arts Council (WCAC), along with the committee members of the Western Maryland Blues Fest (WMBF), are pleased to invite visual artists, including local artists of Western Maryland and the surrounding area, to answer a "Call to Artists" for the opportunity of becoming the 2016 Blues Fest Poster Artist.

BISFA students met with Dr. Ira Lourie at WCAC to view and discuss his current exhibit, " Two Brothers: Converging Vision - Diverging Views by Dr. Ira and Ben Lourie"

Outbreak! The Medical History of Washington County
On Saturday, October 24th, 2015, the Washington County Historical Society will be presenting a new exhibit on the medical history of the area. The exhibit, entitled "Outbreak!" will explore the stories of doctors, nurses, dentists, pharmacists and other medical practitioners throughout the history of the county. Washington County saw more than its fair share of pioneers in the healthcare industry, and their advances are recalled and celebrated in this new exhibit. Artifacts on display include Civil War surgery kits, tools from local doctors and dentists, and a display of bottles and remedies from local pharmacies.
An opening reception will be held from 1 - 3 p.m. on October 24th. Light refreshments will be served. There will be a small admission fee of $5 for non-members.

HCC to offer family and youth programming
(Hagerstown, Md.)- The Continuing Education Division at Hagerstown Community College is offering several personal enrichment programs this fall for youth/teens and families.
                A series of Harry Potter classes will be offered on Saturdays in October, for students in grades four through six. Children ages 10 and up can enjoy "Exploring Fantasy Fiction" on October 31.
                Several programs are offered for a variety of grades on weekdays when WCPS is closed. Minecraft classes will be held on November 2 and 3, and "Musical Theater" on November 2.
                Family courses and trips include "Music and Movement," offered in October, and November; mother/daughter self-defense on September 19; and a trip to the Rockettes/New York Christmas trip on November 21.
                Toddler and preschool courses include "Music and Movement" and "Jump, Play, and Learn," both offered in October, and December.

Experience Halloween at the Jonathan Hager House on Guided Ghost Tours Special late-night tours offered on Halloween night.
Local legends have surrounded the Jonathan Hager House for centuries. Candle-lit Hager House Ghost Tours are being offered in City Park at the 18th century home of our city's founder through October with special late-night tours on Halloween. Tours are being held on the following dates and times: * Saturday, October 24th 7:00 p.m., 8:00 p.m., 9:00 p.m. * Friday, October 30th 9:00 p.m. * Saturday, October 31st 11:00 p.m. and midnight Register online in advance by 4:00 p.m. the night before for the tour for $5, or register on-site for $6. Interested participants are encouraged to register early online as space is limited. Sign up at: Hager House Ghost Tours are generally recommended for guests ages 10 and up, but mature children under age 10 may participate with parental permission.

At its premier in Washington, DC, "A Fresh of Breath Air" received two Helen Hayes nominations for Outstanding New Play and Outstanding Lead Actress. Dale Stein portrays five characters at Fifi's Cafe in this unique solo show the Washington Post called "An authentic vision of humanity...Stein is captivating". Dale has performed her original work with Garrison Keillor's radio show and at New York Theatre Workshop. "A Fresh of Breath Air" is a 70 minute comedy 'with olives'; a theatre experience The City Paper said is "Such exhilarating won't want to leave." Ballet Theatre of Maryland and Ballet and All That Jazz presents the ballet, EXCALIBUR. BTM, Maryland's only professional ballet company along with students from BTJ, a local dance school, will retell the story of King Arthur's legend from the Sword and the Stone through the creation of the Knights of the Round Table through the downfall of Camelot. 
Wizardry, magic, sword fights, romance and betrayal are all part of the ballet that will mesmerize you. The ballet depicts the tumultuous relationship between Arthur and his sister, the Priestess turned sorceress, Morgan Le Fey.
If you like Harry Potter, you'll like EXCALIBUR!
Pianist Sara Buechner to Perform With the Maryland Symphony Orchestra
Sara Davis Buechner, a major prizewinner of many of the world's most prestigious international piano competitions, will be the Maryland Symphony Orchestra's guest artist for two performances of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major, Op. 58 on Saturday, November 7 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, November 8 at 3 p.m. at the historic Maryland Theatre in downtown Hagerstown. The MSO will also perform The Unanswered Question by Charles Ives, The Unquestioned Answer by Cindy McTee, and Death and Transfiguration by Richard Strauss.

Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra Concert

Shepherdstown WV's Friends of Music organization will launch its 2015-2016 performance season with a concert by the Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra on Saturday, November 7. The concert will be held at Shepherdstown's Trinity Episcopal Church at 7:30 p.m. The Orchestra's Music Director, Jed Gaylin, will conduct. This will be the first time the Orchestra has performed at the Church. Dr. Gaylin says a main reason for choosing the Church was its superb acoustics. In keeping with this move to a new venue, the concert will be entitled "Brilliant Beginnings." Three works will be featured: * "Last Round," a piece for double string quartet and bass by Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov, one of the most sought after modern composers; * Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E Minor, Op. 64, with violinist Jorge Àvila; * Beethoven's Symphony No.1 in C Major, Op. 21. Admission will be free for Friends of Music members. The ticket price for others will be $25 per person. Tickets and Friends' memberships can be purchased on the Friends' website at or by mail (FOM, PO Box 220, Shepherdstown, WV 25443) or, if space is available, at the church the evening of the performance. Visa and Master Card will be accepted.
