Main Street Maryland 
On October 30, 2014, the City of Hagerstown announced its designation as a Main Street Maryland community, making it the first Main Street in Washington County. The Main Street program will promote and support downtown revitalization efforts through a committee-structured approach with broad community involvement and participation. Acting Secretary of Maryland's Department of Housing and Community Development, Clarence J. Snuggs, joined Mayor Dave Gysberts in Public Square to announce the designation.
MSO November Concerts

Pianist-Composer Michael Brown Joins Maryland Symphony Orchestra for World Premiere of MSO-Commissioned Piano Concerto on November 8 & 9 Pianist and Composer Michael Brown will be doing triple duty when he joins forces with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra for its November Masterworks concerts on Saturday, November 8 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, November 9 at 3 p.m. at the historic Maryland Theatre in downtown Hagerstown.

 

There will be an "After Party" on Saturday evening beginning immediately after the concert at 28 South Restaurant, 28 South Potomac St., Hagerstown. Brown will be in attendance for a "meet and greet." Tickets are $15 which includes one free drink and appetizers. The restaurant's late night dining menu will also be available for self-pay.

 

The MSO will also be conducting a Food Drive to benefit the Maryland Food Bank/Western Branch from Monday, November 3 through Friday, November 7 at the MSO Office and in the lobby of the Maryland Theatre during the Saturday and Sunday concerts.

Painter Philip Koch is a member of the faculty at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), has exhibited his paintings widely, and is represented in many private and public collections. He is an avid student of American landscape painting, most notably of Edward Harper.

On October 1, 2014, Volunteer Washington County transferred its role as the community's volunteer connector to United Way of Washington County. "United Way believes that volunteerism is a powerful engagement tool; creating positive benefits for the community and individual," stated Melissa Reabold, United Way's executive director. "United Way embraces the philosophy of volunteerism in its Give Advocate Volunteer activities. Taking the role that was generously provided to us from Volunteer Washington County is a gift that we will foster for more volunteer growth and support of local agencies." The current site will soon be redirected to United Way's website; however, users of the current website will not be affected.

For yourself or for gifts, the Women's Club offers the opportunity to shop for unique artisan-created artwork, including pottery, etchings, jewelry, knitted/felted handbags and scarves,wreaths and quilting - twenty in all. The author of a new local history book, George Alfred Townsend & Gathland, will be also be present, signing her book for guests. Wine and decadent chocolate desserts in our lovely historic building will make the evening delightfully memorable. What a nice way to ease into the holiday season!

Bill Engvall is a Grammy nominated, multi-platinum selling recording artist and one of the top comedians in the country. He previously starred in, and executive produced, the TBS sitcom The Bill Engvall Show. Bill was part of the enormously successful Blue Collar Comedy concert films, which sold over nine million units and received a Grammy nomination.
