Fishing Lessons

The Maryland State Arts Council has awarded Washington County Arts Council a $5,000 public art project grant to support the creation and installation of a bronze sculpture of a wildlife tableau for placement in the lake at Hagerstown's City Park.

The Public Art Project is being spearheaded by the collaborative partnership between the Washington County Arts Council (WCAC) and the City of Hagerstown. The Barbara Ingram School for the Arts, the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts and the Valley Art Association have been included with the planning from the initiation of this project and will continue to be actively involved with the supervision and fundraising for this latest endeavor to provide distinctive art for the enjoyment, benefit and education of the community. The proposed sculpture, The Fishing Lesson, by local sculptor, Paul Rhymer promises to provide quality educational experiences for our community's students as well as others in the Washington County. Additionally this new sculpture will attract visitors to not only City Park but to Washington County.

As part of the project, Amanda Miller, an assistant English professor at Hagerstown Community College, is writing a children's book about the bears.

This is the first time that such a public grant has been awarded to the Washington County community since the inception of the program in FY 2008. The Public Art Project Grant through the State Arts Council provides matching grant support for a community-based public art project that will be permanently installed in a public place and accessible.

The Washington County Arts Council, Inc. is funded by a grant from
the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC),
an agency of the
