2018 Sue Hess Award

Remarks reprinted with permission from Sandy Oxx, Executive Director of the Carroll County Arts Council on receiving the 2018 Sue Hess Award.

Congratulations, Sandy!

"The arts give us a peaceful way to express dissent or share our beliefs.
The arts can calm troubled minds or heal a broken heart.
The rhythm of the arts can help us march in sync when we need to or they can give us the infectious beat when we'd rather dance to our own drummer.
The arts are often the only reason that some kids show up at school.
The arts can inspire meaningful dialogue and light a spark for change.
The arts add the sparkle to our celebrations and add comfort to our mourning.
Music and art are often the final part of brains left functioning when dementia invades our bodies.
The arts build bridges to other cultures and connect us to other times in our history.
The arts are a reflection of our humanity.
For some of us, the arts are the absolutely the only way we can be productive, tax paying citizens.
And yes, the arts can even turn marshmallows into money....and nothing else has that sort of magical power."
