WCAC Announces 2014-2015 Officers and Welcomes New Board Members


At its June 2014 meeting the Board of Directors of the Washington County Arts Council,

elected new officers:

    • President--Mary Newby, Rockland Woods Elementary School (WCPS)
    • Vice President--Brendan Fitzsimmons, RBC Wealth Management
    • Treasurer-Secretary--James G. Piern�, Hagerstown Community College

Ms. Newby succeeds James Pierne who has lead the organization for five years.


At the same time, the board elected three new voting members and filled a new ex-officio position:

    • Member--Stephen Miles, Ph.D., Washington County Public Schools
    • Member--Jessica Scott, Habitat for Humanity
    • Member--Daniel Webber, Hagerstown Community College
    • Ex-Officio Member--Robert Hovermale, Barbara Ingram School for the Arts

These community leaders join:

    • Member--Kathy Harple, Tri State Printing, Inc.
    • Member--R. Benjamin Jones, Artist
    • Member--James Miller, After Five Productions, Inc. and Planet Technologies
    • Member--Stuart L. Mullendore, HBP, Inc.
    • Member--Don Viar, Washington County Museum of Fine Arts

WCAC also thanked retiring board member Joan Bontempo of

Hagerstown Community College for her many years of board service.

Joan will continue to support the Arts Council through service on various committees.

Tuesdays through Fridays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The gallery is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

The Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau has named Daniel Spedden as its new Executive Director. Mr. Spedden who was superintendent of the South Mountain State Parks, one of Washington County's outstanding tourism destinations, was on the board that founded the CVB as it transitioned to non-profit status in 1997. Mr. Spedden will assume his new position on September 2, 2014.

Free Advanced Readers Copies, book catalogs, and Keep Calm and Read On tote bags will be available for attendees.

The Allegany County Arts council announces Christopher Sloan as new Executive Director...
Christopher Sloan was named the new executive director of the Allegany Arts Council, replacing longtime executive director Andy Vick. A Cumberland resident since 2010, he is a former chief art director of National Geographic and co-founded a media and exhibitions company, Science Visualization, which is based in the city.
