Artist of the Month
Sherry Carlson
Cradle Calm
(Chosen to be part of the Mississippi Art Colony traveling show)
Sherry grew up in Gulfport, Mississippi where she was encouraged by family and teachers to pursue a career in art. After studies and a degree in graphic design from USM and UAH, she worked in the printing and magazine industry, then on to corporate communications, always squeezing fine art, illustration, and classes in. While mothering two sons and supporting her husband’s career change and Air Force commitment, she turned from graphics back to her first love, painting. During moves to Jackson, San Antonio and Alaska, she studied plein air, surreal art, figure drawing and portraiture.
Watercolor portraits are her specialty and she enjoys creating meaningful commission pieces. Old family photos and Gulf Coast scenes are favorites. She also works in acrylic, oil, collage, pen and ink and pencil. She always carries her camera to capture images that spur inspiration. A successful painting can be sensed. It can touch the emotions.

Artist Statement: I strive to create art that can be felt with all the senses and connect the viewer on an emotional level.
