This week we're presenting Southern Vermont Arts Center, Cahoon Museum of American Art and the Dartmouth Cultural Center.
This week's exhibitions feature the whimsy, wonder and craft of folk art. From hand-stitched and embroidered textiles to mixed media scenes to intricately hand-painted narrative works, these three shows offer a glimpse into the region's folk art community.

Southern Vermont Arts Center presents The Wee Worlds of Salley Mavor, a show that captures the stitched, beaded and all-around hand-made artwork of Salley Mavor. The props, scenery and characters in Mavor's intricate scenes show immense detail and dedication to her craft. This exhibit features a wide range of scenes from throughout Mavor's career. Cahoon Museum of American Art presents Peaceable Kingdom: The Art of Donald Saaf, featuring the work of Donald Saaf as he "explores the subtle line between fine art and folk art in paintings that are heartwarming and approachable," according to a curatorial statement. In his large-scale paintings and collages, Saaf draws upon his memories of nature, family and community from his life in rural Vermont. Dartmouth Cultural Center presents Folks and Fables, showcasing new work resulting from a collaboration between Don Cadoret and Mary Ellen Flinn. This show features Cadoret's colorful and detailed Story Paintings and Flinn's carved and assembled sculptures. Both artists "are self-taught and inspired by the antique fragments and frames of our past." Kent Monkman: The Great Mystery at the Hood Museum of Art in Hanover, New Hampshire, through December 16
The Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth, presents Kent Monkman: The Great Mystery featuring a new body of paintings by Cree artist Kent Monkman — including two commissioned works for the Hood Museum of Art’s permanent collections — The Great Mystery serves as both an introduction to and a revisitation of Monkman’s early interest in abstract expressionism.
