GCAC
ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE
ALICIA ROJAS
Continued Research and Development

Artist Alicia Rojas is examining the synchronicities between honeybees and a migration journey, leaving Colombia for the US — reclaiming place, traditions and triumphant hardships through visual art, performance, social practice, and video. Through the support of GCAC and an additional grants from the California Art Council, the artist traveled to Colombia for three-months of research and inspiration.  Travels took the artist to the cities of Bogotá, Medellín, Huila, Mano Gigante, and San Agustin.  In Bogotá, she was able to visit and reconnect with her child school La Presentación de Sans Facon - connecting dots and re-claiming roots after being undocumented in the US for a large period of her life. The knowledge, materials, and relationships made will assist the artist in developing a series of social engagements and a solo exhibitions at GCAC in 2023.

A first engagement the artist is developing is titled CHOCOLATON. The project is envisioned as a series of community engaged hot chocolate pop-ups at GCAC, city parks, and Downtown parklets. The artist is developing the project in partnership with local merchant AltaBaja Market and a Southern California cholate producer, with additional financial support provided by an individual artist grant from the City of Santa Ana Arts and Culture Commission.

Through her residency, the artist was introduced to fellow GCAC artist-in-residence Gregory Sale. Through this connection, Sale invited Rojas to be one of the members of the Art and Justice Leadership Cohort (ARA 591) seminar design program this past fall semester with community members and MFA students at Arizona State University School of Art - co-developed with ASU Art Museum curator and artist Julio Cesar Morales. The program was created in collaboration with ASU Art Museum’s 2021 exhibition Undoing Time: Art and the Histories of Incarceration, that focused on the foundational roots of confinement from philosophical, sociological, theological, and art historical perspectives.

A LOOK BACK
2012
ADAM MOSER
THE CUT-OFF MEN

As Major League Baseball (MLB) begins the second-half of its season, we thought it would be a great time to look back at Adam Moser's GCAC artist-in-residence project The Cut-Off Men.

Adam Moser’s GCAC project involved the opportunity to realize his lifelong dream of playing in the big leagues by trying out for Major League Baseball. Recognizing he was not alone in this dream, Moser placed an “open call” to the GCAC community for individuals to form a nine-member tryout team. Team members had to be in good physical shape, available to attend multiple events and available the complete day of tryouts. Team members were also required to be at least twenty-five years or older. The call was a success, finding nine diverse community team members who became The Cut-Off Men.

Thank you to former GCAC resident Mickey Fisher for the creation of this short documentary film.
