Busy Times
Well, it had to happen. There are so many things going on in Arts Blast Land that the calendar listings got too unwieldy to stay in Tuesday's Blasts, so c
hanges are happening.
Beginning with this issue,
On the Calendar, Auditions, and Calls for Artists
will move from the weekly Arts Blast to their own individual pages at WilliMiller.com. They've been there for several weeks but, until today, also at the end of each Arts Blast. Updates will be added online as necessary.
What a Weekend!
will continue its Thursday delivery and land on the website, too.
My only complaint about having so many things to choose from? Having to choose!
With that in mind, I'm reminding readers who would like to see their events in the Arts Blast calendar listings, you
must
use this format. If I have to search through that beautiful eBlast you've created and sent as a press release, there's an excellent chance it won't happen. And don't cross your fingers and hope that I'll pick up on your schedule on your Facebook page. I really don't want to miss promoting your events, so please follow the guidelines and make sure I have everything at least a week in advance. Go ahead and send one or two photos (in addition to that eBlast) and if I need more, I'll let you know. Thanks for understanding.
Use this format:
Who
(organization)
What
(Event)
When
(dates, time)
Where
(Name of venue, address)
Why
(a brief description of the purpose)
Web/Facebook address
Contact to be made public
(for tickets, questions, etc.)
***Media contact with email for my followup (not for publication)
Then add a short, descriptive release if available.
Send no more than two photos, with captions, unless more are requested.

St. Lucie County Rock & Gem Club Show
|
My association with
The St. Lucie Rock and Gem Club began years ago, when I interviewed members Hannah Pollack and Sue Ritter for my radio show on WQCS. Their invitation to stop by the club for a tour and an introduction to the lapidary arts was the beginning of a learning adventure I'm still enjoying. One class - wirewrapping - led to another and then another and then to my own studio full of machines, bench tools, metals, and rough slabs that would be turned into beautiful stones for jewelry. There's something magical about starting with a dull piece of rock and ending with a polished beauty.
|
The club was founded 41 years ago by a small group of people interested in the lapidary arts, rocks and minerals. The membership is now closer to 200 active members. The annual show and sale is this weekend, Oct. 26 and 27 at the St. Lucie County Civic Center. It's a great chance to see what the club members do and gather information to find out if it's a path you'd like to follow.
Classes include lampwork (making glass beads with fire); metal shaping, wrapping, and casting; enameling; beading of all kinds, and others. Registration is open now for the fall semester that begins Oct. 28. The studio workshop is at
6901 Heritage Dr., Port Saint Lucie.

Space Coast Flute Orchestra
|
The Space Coast Flute Orchestra
, under the direction of Susan McQuinn, will share Autumn Around the World Sunday, Oct. 27, at Suntree United Methodist Church, Melbourne. No tickets required for this free concert. Donations are gratefully accepted.
Space Coast Flute Orchestra is one of the largest, regularly rehearsed flute orchestras in the country, numbering more than 30 musicians. Founded in 1983 by Nancy Clew-Eller, SCSO "provides adult flutists of Brevard County with educational and performance opportunities, while supporting local young flutists and enriching cultural arts in the community."

From Riverside Theatre:
Love theatre? Want to learn more about the shows being produced at Riverside Theatre? BACKSTAGE ACCESS gives you the key to behind-the-scenes information and discussions of our main stage productions. This series of adult courses will take a closer look at the professional productions being presented by Riverside Theatre while also exploring theatre as an art form and celebrating the magical relationship that exists between actors and audience within a shared space and time.
Backstage Access classes seek to build a greater awareness of the many facets and collaborations involved in theatrical expression as we continue to explore the questions “Why theatre?” and “What makes the live theatrical event different from all other art forms?”

Lake Wales Pioneer Days Honors
Milford Myhre
|
Milford Myhre, the man being honored during Lake Wales Pioneer Days, gave me one of my more memorable moments many years ago when I went to Bok Tower Gardens to record an interview for Arts Spotlight in 1998. (Yes, another example of why I never throw anything away.) I don't have that interview on tape, unfortunately.
He took me all the way up the tower to the carillon room. At least, I'm remembering it as All the Way Up. Maybe it was on the second floor but it was such a thrill I imagined I was in the clouds. I hope I won't get him in trouble by saying this, but he let me sit at the keyboard and actually touch the keys. Of course, it wasn't set up for playing, but still.
|
Myhre had been carillonneur at Bok Tower for 36 years when he retired in 2004. He first played the carillon in 1950, at the Plymouth Congregational Church while at the University of Nebraska.
A Lake Wales resident for more than 50 years, Myhre's contributions to the area are many. He established the first International Carillon Festival, the Carillon Fellows program, the Anton Brees Carillon Library, and the Music at Pinewood concert series. He is also a founding board member of the Lake Wales Arts Council, the Lake Wales Museum Commission, and founder and director of the Lake Wales Chorale.
And there's more
.
|
In addition to the 10 a.m. Saturday honoring of Myhre, Pioneer Days will feature live music, vendors of handmade crafts, a food and beverage menu that includes Mediterranean dishes, Philly cheese steaks, Italian and Polish sausages, funnel cakes, and more. On the entertainment menu: Nat West & Pickin’ In the Park, Lake Wales High School Highlander Band, Mountain Brew Trio, Adam Duss Experience, Studio 6 Dancers, Talako Indian Dancers, Jason Hobert on guitar, Utah Farris on flute, Bryan Rivers, Hank’s Cracker Storytelling, and Craig Singleton & the Big City Band.

From Edison and Ford Winter Estates:
In the northern states, most gardeners plant vegetables in the spring; however, in much of Florida, fall is the best time for planting popular edibles. The Edison and Ford Winter Estates Garden Shoppe just received a large shipment of arugula, eggplant, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, lettuce, celery, chives, and tomatoes, as well as several types of herbs. For gardeners wishing to start vegetables from seed, packets are available in the Museum Store.
Vegetables and herbs can be grown in flower pots or raised beds in potting soil throughout the cooler months.
|
|
For winter residents that don't have room for a garden, raised beds (four feet by 10 feet) are available for rent in the Community Garden at the Estates from October through May for $100 or just $75 for Edison Ford members (the rate is for the entire season).
Horticulture Specialist, Eric Frankovitch, is preparing the beds, adding compost and will lead gardening meetings for community garden members. Garden members will have access to garden tools, water, soil and mulch.
The Garden Shoppe is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and garden staff is available to answer questions and help with plant selection. To reserve a raised bed, call 239-334-7419. Gardening events and classes are listed on the website at
